Alpha Omega M.D. – Episode #256

…The plight of the Negro community has not changed, yea, surely worsened by the continuing Great Depression, as the world-wide economic downward spiral is called…

Blessings III by John Holyfield

Blessings III by John Holyfield

The death of Princess Olla has never left the mind of A.O. Campbell, not merely because of the manner in which she died. Laura Bell was like a mother to him, going back to the days of his lengthy visits to San Luis Lake and that dear German couple, the Endlichoffers. These people were like family to him and seeing that his parents Willy and Amanda lived only long enough to see the Great War end, (plus a year or two), Princess Olla was his family. Oh yes, there are sisters Agnes and Francis, whom he has set up in a house in Tallahassee. And he has Hosea. Oh my, Hosey, now there is a relative for you, as in, ‘You can choose your friends, but family chooses you’.

And then there are Maggie Lou and the girls. They make sure he keeps busy. He can scarce afford not to, with three females perfecting the art of spending money. The result: he has been beguiled by the lucrative, if not, illegal, world of abortion.  ‘Somebody else will do them if’n I don’t,’ he says to himself. ‘With less skill and care,’ he adds.

And then there is his dream of building his own hospital. He can see it there on the empty lot next to their house on Virginia Street, just a few steps from where Laura Bell was left for dead.

dream

The plight of the Negro community has not changed, yea, surely worsened by the continuing Great Depression, as the world-wide economic downward spiral is called. This is like telling a starving man that he needs to go on a diet. These impoverish people’s health suffers as bad as or worse than their jobless quagmire. And with the number of black doctors increasing yearly, what better a place to come to the aid of their own? Care would be given, regardless of ability to pay. A.O. wants to provide a place for black doctors to practice outside the present restrictive structure, to make an absolute difference in the lives of the needy.

Where will the money come from? Dream high and tread lightly.

…Today’s Episode #250 (7-13-2016) the spotlight shines on 2 new(ish) characters:

  • Carolyn Hanes

  • Sara Fenwick

Before I began blogging my book THE LIFE & TIMES OF A BLACK SOUTHERN DOCTOR, I blogged my book CONSTANCE CARAWAY P.I. ~ Forever Mastadon. In the “links” column of WRITING IS FUN-DAMENTAL, you will find an Episode Catalog for CONSTANCE CARAWAY. https://writingisfun-damental.com/2014/12/20/episode-catalog-forever-mastadon/

Synopsis CONSTANCE CARAWAY ~FOREVER MASTADON~

A private eye and her colleagues are blinded by science…and a greater power

Historical Fiction from Gwendolyn Hoff

Creation vs. Evolution, Heaven & hell collide on Earth.

CONSTANCE CARAWAY ~FOREVER MASTADON~ 75,000 words that chronicle an early case taken on by CONSTANCE CARAWAY INVESTIGATION, a Tallahassee Florida based private detective agency, consisting of the title character and her partner Fanny Renwick.

Constance and Fanny are drawn to Chicago to investigate the disappearance of Willard Libby, a University of

Chicago biochemist who has been working on a breakthrough project. They are hired by an associate of Libby, who does not trust his conventional local options.

Set in 1951 Chicago, Forever Mastadon (Mastodon is intentionally misspelled) is an organization that is bent on permanently quieting Libby, as it applies to radiocarbon dating. Bottom line: the devil himself is behind a conspiracy that includes textbook publishers, the United States Justice Department, a cult leader and a handful or two of 2-bit hoodlums.

As a result of good detective work and some dumb luck, the scientist is located………catatonic–at a mental hospital. But that is just the beginning; his mind will be fully restored, he is hidden away and his death wrongly reported,  all the while the antagonists behind his abduction are about to be found out.

It is not long before a supporting cast comes together to combat the unknown forces behind the “Great Deception”, the lie being that

Have Truth – Will Find

carbon dating has identified life on Earth as 100 of millions of years old. A Chicago taxi driver, a pilot friend of Constance, a Tallahassee lawyer and a CIA rogue, unite to see that Willard Libby’s truths see the spotlight of day.

While God has his angels, the Libbyites (13 people who are his advocates) get help from a young Southern preacher named Billy Graham, who incorporates the science supporting Creationism into his Crusades and finally a Revival Meeting for the ages, a finale that will either make you sit up in your chair or stand up and cheer.

I have branded my own style of Historical Fiction, which I first brought to the world with my book, THE LIFE AND TIMES OF A BLACK SOUTHERN DOCTOR (1896-1959),(ISBN13 978-1-4691-9018). Constance Caraway and her friends give me the wings to bring history to life, with this riveting story and others to follow.

About the Author  3rd person

Gwen was born in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin in an unnamed year. She grew up with Mom, Dad and younger sister and lived there until going off to university.

At Oconomowoc High School, she would fall in love… with the written word and after graduating, Miss Hoff immediately began her writing career; Science Fiction being the unlikely genre of choice. Her studies in English and Meteorology at UW-Milwaukee are mere window dressing to the greater passion of fashioning phrases; original ways to arrange the English language.

A Trekkie (Star Trek NBC Television 1967-1969) to the core, Gwen would go on to complete three Sci Fi novels. In a pre-computer world, all but the third has survived the passage of time (THE RETURN TRIP 2030 – 2051) currently posted at www.writingisfun-damental.com. The newest novel concerning THE SPACE FAMILY MCKINNEY is The Null Solution (2051-    ).

She has 3 wonderful sons and a solid group of quality friends. The satisfaction of family and faith in the Living God are what drives this writer of both books and just about any other form; if it requires the right words, she can do it.

To this very day, Gwendolyn still loves Science Fiction, cries at  every new big-screen  STAR TREK movie and looks at the stars, with a fond and unique eye to the heavens.

But as the years wear on, Historical Fiction has become the comfortable literary vehicle of choice. Personal website: www.gwendolynhoff.com .

That brings us to the year 1994. In that year, she would meet the Granddaughter of the subject doctor of THE LIFE AND TIMES OF A BLACK SOUTHERN DOCTOR  1896 – 1959 (Alpha Omega M.D.). She entered into a partnership for the purpose of bringing the story of Alpha Omega Campbell to light. With informational trips to book’s setting of Tallahassee FL and a treasure trove of realized history, adding Washington DC to her bag of tricks, the epic story of a medical groundbreaker took form.

During the intervening 12+ years, the life & times of a fine southern physician and gentleman would be lovingly crafted into words; some fact, some fiction. The final result is a unique writing style and an unequaled perspective on history; an interesting blend of relevant characters and what was really happening around them, at that particular time.

And now it is on to a series of books concerning Constance Caraway P.I., a skilled private investigator from Tallahassee Florida. CONSTANCE CARAWAY & ASSOCIATES will transport the reader to a confoundingly wonderful combination of cases and places. The 1st installment is titled Constance Caraway ~ Forever Mastadon (1951 Chicago) and can be read in its entirety at Writing is Fun-damental.com.

Alpha Omega M.D. – Episode #178

…I would rather be a beat walking cop on the streets of New York, enforcing the truth, than to be the sheriff in a corrupt county…

Officer Dibble

Top Cat Beat Cop (Officer Dibble)

“You don’t have that Clete punk in custody and some hotshot lawyer is calling the shots. Not in my lifetime.” Hank Blount has been blinded by his usurped power and his racial predisposition.

“I wouldn’t underestimate them.”

“Them?”

“They are employees of Herbert Love. Did you really expect him to stay out of it?” Straight talk usually doesn’t work with Blount, because he always has a way around trouble. “But that’s not the worst of it. The lawyer wants to talk to Charlie’s girl, Hank.”

“You know she is on her way to Panama City. She ain’t pregnant anymore and she won’t be around to tell her story. I am not in the mood to hand over the nigger and that little tramp is history. We’ll have the only witness, the guy who saw them trying to leave the scene of an accident.”

“They saved the girl’s life by prying open Charlie’s roadster and you know how fast he drives.”

“Do you like having a job, sheriff? I butter your bread, so you best decide which side you are on.”

Upon further review, weighing conscience and justice, the Calhoun County Sheriff removes his badge. “You’re on your own, Hank. No way am I goin’ to be part of this big a lie.”

Company Town-001   Blount turns to fraud. “Be out of your house in 48 hours. The Bank of Blountstown is calling in your loan. You should have made last month’s payment on time.”

“I told you why we couldn’t, the new baby and all…”

“You better be more loyal in your next job, if you get one,” Blount supposes.

“I may not get a job, but I am sure the district judge will listen to what I have to say.” The sheriff turns the tables. “And it won’t stop with this case.”

For as long as anyone can remember, Hank Blount is without slick retort. His unopposed power seems to be eroding, because of a previously least threatening source: a black man, in a hopelessly incriminating position.

He never calls “his” sheriffs by their names, not wanting to get to know them or their families, in full realization that he may discard them, for the slightest insubordination, at any given moment. “Perhaps I have spoken in haste, sheriff. I know what they teach you in police training, but sometimes you have to skirt the law to achieve justice.”

“Justice? Upholding the law is why I became a peace officer and I have come the conclusion that there is little of that in Blountstown. I would rather be a beat walking cop on the streets of New York, enforcing the truth, than to be the sheriff in a corrupt county.” There are times when morals trump money. “I don’t know where I’ll be sleeping two days from now, but I can assure you that it will be with a clear conscience.”

“They are going to ask why you resigned.”

“I will tell the truth. You will make up something.”

The sandy soil of Calhoun County is shifting as fast as did the bedrock in San Francisco; one is already being reconstructed, the other may not see that day in a Blount’s lifetime.

Alpha Omega M.D. – Episode #173

…The Calhoun County Sheriff applies handcuffs to Willy, without bothering to find out who was driving….

Protocol for accident situations is in its infancy, but one commonality involves involving the law.

“How come you dint tell him I was doin’ the drivin’, Willy? I ain’t goin’ to let you take a fall for me.”

Driver Licence (old)-001 “You ain’t got a license ta drive dis truck, Clete. They may throw you in jail.”

In the midst of noble intent, there comes a faint groan from the smashed auto, the first sign that it contains a driver. Willy leaps into action without hesitation, running to fetch a tire iron from its popped trunk.

“Get the bar from out the truck seat, quick like, I think we can free this door (grunting) pry on the bottom?”

“I think it’s workin’ Willy! Try a skinch lower–here she comes–pull with your hands.”

Car accident (old)  That last effort finally swings the blood stained driver side door open. The painful moans are coming from the female passenger, not the driver, witnessed by his crushed skull. Between them, they pull him out, carefully placing his lifeless body to the side of the road. They are even more careful with the woman, who is suffering from unknown injuries; Willy had learned triage during his stint rescuing hurricane victims.

Shortly after completing the extrication, the police sedan peels onto the scene, a Calhoun County insignia painted on the door, closely followed by the salesman, who was true to his word. The first thing they see is Willy looking inside the expensive auto.

“What do you think you are doing, boy?” The sheriff looks sideways at what he thinks are questionable motives.

“The lady over there is askin’ for her bag,” he explains.

“Are you sure you weren’t stealing it?” He is wary.

“Please take her to a doctor. She says she is with child.”

“Not before I take you in for killing Charlie Blount.” What a cruel coincidence.

He applies handcuffs to Willy, without bothering to find out who was driving. “I hereby deputize you,” he pulls out a star from his pocket, handing it to the salesman. “Take both of them to the Calhoun County Jail. I’ll take care of Charlie’s girlfriend.”

“Willy wasn’t drivin’, sheriff!” Clete is distraught.

“Don’t be lying for that nigger, son. I have a witness who tells me different.”

“He was tryin’ to move the truck off the wreck. I got us in this mess, when…”

“I don’t want to hear it! Take both of them away.”

Alpha Omega M.D. – Episode #163

…This is a legal document which I am leaving in your care. To make a long story short, it bequeaths the listed land holdings to Maggie Lou upon my death…

dummkoph

John Ferrell now confides his unilateral decision to include Maggie Lou in his newly drafted will. to his friend and neighbor, caretaker of his unforeseen burden.

"I speak German"

“Ziggy?” He regains the attention of the doctor turned logger. “I need to tell you about a change in my last will and testament.”

“Vhat?  Vhat ezz dis nonsense. You are as healthy as your finest horse, dummkopf.”

“No, I’m not foretelling my demise. I am merely concerned about Maggie Lou’s future.” He doesn’t have to tell Ziggy of his plans now, but disaster seems to lurk beyond every turned calender year.

“Proceed.” Ziggy puts down his saw, conceding that all the windfall wood will not be collected and cut-up in one day.

Property         “This is a legal document which I am leaving in your care. To make a long story short, it bequeaths the listed land holdings to Maggie Lou upon my death.

“Vhat about Martha unt James unt Agnes… unt Laura? Does not Laura deserve za same consideration?”

“Maggie Lou represents the future. I do not want the magistrates to decide the exact line of parentage; leaving this portion of my estate to my blood child should not cause the smallest stir… except from my family, which will be richly taken care of. We are speaking of a million dollars or more of business and personal holdings, to be split among them, as compared to patches of mostly unoccupied land in the currently less desirable sections of Tallahassee.

“Mind you, that yes, they do not have prior knowledge of these properties, but neither have they legitimate rule over whom I leave them to.

“Princess Olla, or as we refer to as, Laura Bell, will have insurmountable difficulties in administrating her part of my will; too many doubts and lingering bitterness will surround my passing. That is why I have established a living trust, appropriating this portion to Maggie at and not before the age of 21.

Ziggy-001       “And until then, please live a long life, for the sake of Laura. Her very essence is life on San Luis Lake. In Frenchtown, she will be just another black woman with a light-skinned baby. In your house, she is family.”

The proceeding soliloquy is awakening legal propriety in a previously unenlightened cohort. “I am afraid that eet eez me wheech eez zee dummkopf. Of course I vill guard that vich you leave, Maggie Lou – or Frieda vill for zat matter. You can count on us, Johann.”

…Danke shoen, Johann, zere eez two years vorth of vood down…

woodpile

In the aftermath of the nearby tornado, “There is a lot of good kindling wood.” John comments upon seeing Ziggy using his cross buck to cut branches to a length compatible with the chamber of the wood burning stove.

Blue Boy by Jan Perkins

“Ya,” agrees Ziggy, scraping the humidity from his brow. He points to his wood lot. “I hope zat za storm von’t keep Alpha and Villy from today. I could use their team to drag za deadfall closer by.”

John can sympathize with Ziggy, having graduated from wood heat to fuel oil recently. “I’ll send Joseph over with Blue Boy,” one ton of aging draft horse, still very strong and always willing to serve.

Danke shoen, Johann, zere eez two years vorth of vood down.

Doc Ziggy and Frieda are not getting any younger, a fact not lost on their grateful neighbor, the beneficiary of their kind gestures. Neither does he overestimate his own mortality and what effect his death would have on the welfare of Olla and especially Maggie Lou.

John Ferrell is seriously considering a very radical thought about the financial security of his neo-illegitimate daughter. It pertains to his will and possible alterations to it, the one something and only thing that will take other survivors of his death by surprise.

Ferrell's Grocery-001

Over the years, close to 25 to be exact, John Ferrell has done business in the greater Tallahassee area. It is his groceries that are the marquee of his presence here; three stores that have served two generations with the necessities of life. Amidst the workings, of what is no small miniature empire, comes occasional and rare opportunity to acquire property from customers who have little trouble confiding in a community friend like John Ferrell, yet have no other perceived place to turn.

Empire

There are times when profits from meat, vegetables, canned goods and the newest of consumer fare need to be siphoned off. Real estate is the safest of auxiliary investments, least likely to be scrutinized by the uninformed. 31 such parcels are part of a larger plan of a more aggressive businessman, at a time when he considered rivaling all comers for the title of “King Tallahassee”.

But times have indeed changed. An 1896 lapse in judgment, encouraged by the tempting of the flesh, has placed a solid brick wall in this path of assertive city dominance. His afternoon of fantasy and passion has now officially laid claim to that once youthful goal.
