Chapter Twenty

A FATHER’S LOVE

…Reverend Billy instructs his flock (45,000 on 4/28/1951) on the reverent custom of Holy Communion… but the Devil is as irreverent as ever…

“My friends, Holy Communion is part of God’s covenant with mankind, to share in the body and blood of the resurrected Son of God, Jesus Christ who died for our sins, so that we would enjoy the promise of life everlasting.

“In a few moments, the same men who sold you things to eat and drink will distribute the elements freely among you. There are but two things I ask of you: One, only take the bread and wine if you have already or about to hand your life over to the Lord. And two, please do not partake of either until I have given the word. We will then share in this sacrament together, as did Jesus did with his Apostles the night he was betrayed.”

Reverend Billy instructs his flock (45,000 on 4/28/1951) on the reverent custom of Holy Communion.

Meanwhile“I love the word ‘betrayed’. Judas was such an easy score; buy him off with a sack of silver and he gives up the Divine One’s only human offspring! Born of a virgin mother, please! That is so turn-of-the-millennium!” The one and only Pentateuch, in the clothing of concession supervisor, is listening to the loudspeaker system, ready to administer his other duty, deploying the bread and wine of Communion. He has taken to talking toPhantom_Stranger himself, without an accomplice that will knowingly buy into his deadly plan.

He loves recounting his past successes, “Adam and Eve don’t count. All I did was demonstrate that paradise should not be enough and that they too could be gods. Humans are such flawed creatures.”

He believes it is his job to taunt the very God who created him.

“And what is it with all this fuss about revival? Every 50 of their miserly years or so, some fool bible-thumping fool will get lucky and turn enough heads that it has to be labeled an awakening. Wake up you fools!”

He relishes each new challenge.

But as sure as I exist, their fresh faith in the Father will only last until I can make them forget.”

–Great boss (and all around greasy guy) P. Joseph Winters oversees the staging of Communion, an institution that he only pretends to give a rat’s rooty-tooty about. He has added his own personal touch to the festivities, not necessarily a good thing any of the time.

His anticipatory enthusiasm is difficult to conceal, “Come on cool cats, eat and drink and be closer to your god!”

The Devil is as irreverent as ever.

Samuel Goldwyn Jr. swoops in to provide an up-to-the-minute update on what it’s like out in the stadium proper, “The place is packed Connie girl. Billy has just knocked their socks off with his sermon set-up. Man, can that man get a crowd riled up!”

He loves the good theater, provided by a good man, right out the pages of the Good Book.

“It’s time to saddle up. The filmed interviews are rolling as I speak… and I might add Ace old boy, that plane crash of yours? Worth the price of admission!! Any time you want to do that again, for more movie footage, me or my dad would love to film it.”

CrashLanding

“I just got the Angel back in the air and Billy is getting tired of bus rides, so I will take a pass.”

“How about our plane and no passengers…?”

“No, no and did I mention absolutely not!? It may have been fun to witness from the ground, but there is no way I am going to crash a perfectly good airplane.

“I was just saying,” you can’t blame a guy for trying. “But seriously, we need to get those carriages out into the good-light, which is perfect this time of the day!”

The time has come to enter the coliseum, an arena of battle where good and evil are on a collision course. It isn’t often that neither side in a conflict knows exactly what the other is planning. Like enemy submarines patrol the same water, trying to be as quiet as possible, even in normal conversation, lest they give away their position or tip off what they have planned.

The only being who knows what is going on is God Himself, and maybe a couple angels. Everybody else is just ???guessing???

…The P.I. talks to her people before the Comiskey Park Greater Chicago Crusade Revival Grand Finale…

Reflection CC-fm-001

Constance  is not done reflecting.

“And finally we have THE scientist whose half-life was nearly no life, all because he found out that, that not only he, but just about everyone else had gotten one thing wrong. All this fuss over how old things are! If you can shave years off my age, by all means please do!”

“You would need a huge miracle for that CC!” Ace either douses the nostalgic mood or fans the flames of a tabooed subject.

“At least Worth is a true gentleman,” Fanny chimes in, “he wouldn’t make fun of my age.”

“That’s right, Sweet Crumbs.” Worth drops the other shoe. “All I know is that if youName Tag 1-001 wore high heels, you’d have to duck under the clouds!”

“Sweet Crumbs, oh my, that is a riot!!! Hey Sweet Crumbs, do you give ol’ Worth some of your sugar?”

“Sweet Crumbs is going to strangle Gator, yes the Liti-Gator as in alligator, but notName Tag 1-001 before we make an announcement.” Fanny Renwick rises above the “pet name game” to deliver breaking news. “Worth and I are going back to Tallahassee tomorrow. Doc Campbell needs some help, so Eddie and especially you Rex keep an eye on the house… and make sure that the city of Chicago doesn’t evict the horses.”

“Not to worry Fan, you know that I must have a cousin who works for the city streets and sanitation, buildings, water, fire,” Eddie D. guesses.

Fanny looks at his wife, “The Dombroski’s/Baxter’s got it covered, right Edie?” who nods supportively, appreciating the man who she almost lost twice.

Eddie's Cousins-001Seal of Approval-001Eddie Story-001Checker-Cab

“Why do I doubt your cousin-power Eddie?” Fanny pauses to bolster spirits on a more personal note. “I hope we can keep both Florida and Chicago working Connie. The local gumshoes here are pretty lame, as are the ones who aren’t are on the take. But you know that we cannot abandon our friends back home, they keep me grounded and it will do us well to stay connected.”

As the weeks in Chicago rolled on, away from their first Christmas outside the Panhandle, the ground that needed covering was wide and it meant that Constance and Fanny had to operate independently of the other. With the unofficial addition of Ace and Worth to the team, the once inseparable women have learned to adapt quite well.

“As long as we can be flexible, you know, when another hot case falls in our laps, I know we can do it Fan.” The two best friends embrace each other in a way that almost encourages the others to give them some privacy.

…The P.I. talks to her people before the Comiskey Park Greater Chicago Crusade Revival Grand Finale…

Reflection CC-fm-001

She saunters over to the shorter Martin Kamen to plant a kiss on top of his head. Of all the people and situations that Fanny and she have encountered, it is Willard Libby’s closest colleague who has been there every step of the way. Whatever it took, whenever it was needed, Martin stepped out of his comfort zone to make things happen. He opened his home to two strange ladies and allowed them to take the lead.

“Without Martin, I am afraid we are not standing here ready to ride around a baseball field filled with people, in C-14 Coaches. He discovered carbon-14, which prior to very recently, we thought were 14 pieces of burnt toast. If he doesn’t get someone else involved, Willard may still be squirreled away in a mental hospital, right Dr. Steinberg?”

Looking at Willard’s Aunt, she comments, “I understand that you and our man of many names, let’s see: Jesse James/Agent Daniels/Bernard Spencer/The Rogue and whatever else Penty and Forever Mastadon calls him, have bonded over that lightning strike; Mother Teresa meets Elliot Ness meets Mother Nature…

“You’re a man who travels in more circles than a carnival pony, Jesse. If you ever want to write a book, I have a friend named Gwenny who can help you with that; such are the quality stories you can tell. But even if you keep your secrets close to your vest, you have renewed my faith in government employee and again, without your dances with the devil, we’re not successful.”

…”When Fanny and I came to Chicago, we expected to solve a crime and go back to Florida, now here we are, surrounded by old friends and new and hating to leave”

Reflection CC-fm-001

“This has been one helluva 5 months you guys,” Constance glances apologetically at the present preacher in deference to Helluva-001her use of words, “I mean heck, one heck a bumpy ride, but we all made it here in one piece. Eddie did take two for the team and my partner did her best to get kidnapped and top that off by having her neck broke, but all things considered…”

“… Amen,” her assessment is punctuated by Reverend Graham, who raises both hands high, “Thank you, dear Lord of us all, for your loving protection.  Please use us to accomplish your good, on the Earth that you created. May this weary world see you for who you really are, our Father who loves his children.”

“And would you place your blessing,” he holds the Holy parchment high, “on this, your instructions for the banishment of demons.”

Amen and amen’s make their way around the semicircular gathering of Libbyites; from those who have always believed, to the ones who have recently seen the light; both equal is the sight of God.

“Thank you Billy. You have given us the gift of an ultimate goal and we’re 2 hours from achieving it. When Fanny and I came to Chicago, we expected to solve a crime and go back to Florida, now here we are, surrounded by old friends and new and hating to leave.

“But after seeing what we’ve seen and learning what we’ve learned, we are changed women. Fanny can tell you that a case like this would never happen in Tallahassee; messy divorces, petty extortion, that’s what we do down there. What did we get here in Chicago: kidnappings, murders, conspiracy, demoniacs?

“Having guys like Worth and Ace around doesn’t hurt either.” CCPI’s heart and soul, bares both. “And what can I say about that Eddie D. and his Cousins. Rex is the only one of them we have met, but the rest have been with us, ever since we came to town. I can tell you this Eddie and Edie; you will be the cousins they will be talking about from now on. Thank you for your friendship.”

Libby thoughts-001

~~~God has a habit of using some of the least likely people to rise up and seize the moment~~~
Agent Daniels-001**When Agent Daniels, the G-man with another plan, makes himself known, Constance finds a way to weave him into her ragtag trick bag. Instead of eschewing the government insider, she finds him to actually be an insider of another variety, the kind that has placed him precariously close to the underworld, the world that contains the very source of what has become a grand conspiracy to further the Great Deception.
AcePic3**With Fanny back at home, helping a fellow Tallahassean in trouble, Ace Bannion flies onto the scene and without throwing Constance into an ineffective tizzy, he adds invaluable mobility with his private plane and global panache with a Mediterranean interlude, topped off by a Wisconsin treasure hunt. He has taken her emotional past and put it in its place. A beautiful woman has emerged, no longer weighed down by dead-end personal concerns.
**Billy Graham. What’s in a name? He is an evangelist with a twist; a Bible-taught warrior, a logistics magician and a miracle maker, all wrapped into an imposing Southern gentleman. When Constance learns of Graham’s participation in the Tolentine Summit, it is he that she uses to accentuate the connection between radiocarbon-14, Willard Libby and the conspiracy to squelch the effort to enlighten the mislead world. Only a man like him could bring this mini saga to a Itessuitable conclusion.
**Twelve Libbyites (and growing) are gathered together, ready to step into the spotlight and tell their stories, for such a time like this.
Constance Caraway P.I. ~ Episode 224
…From the moment that she answered her Florida front door on the day before Christmas 1950, the road to Chicago was being laid out for her……Libby thoughts-001
Constance Caraway has assembled an employee meeting of her own sort, recounting the series of events that brought her odd troupe together.
From the moment that she answered her Florida front door on the day before Christmas 1950, the road to Chicago was being laid out for her and she didn’t even know it. It was her rambunctious dog Molly – who heralded the approach of Jimmie from Western Union – who carried a message from some perfect stranger – who was missing one good scientist.
God has a habit of using some of the least likely people to rise up and seize the moment.
**When Willard Libby went missing, Martin Kamen needed a course of action that was swift, immediate and without an obvious local choice to aid him. He Libby Dead or Alive-001came upon a paper written by Libby, referring to a private investigator (Constance Caraway Private Investigation) from Tallahassee who had the moxie to navigate the fuzzy border between legal and not so much, while skirting the hornet’s nest that is local and federal law enforcement.
**Back in WWII, while the FBI fumbled, the OSS stumbled and internal security at the Manhattan Project tumbled into a paranoiac stupor, Constance and Fanny were able to ferret out the double-crossing German where the others failed.
Seal of Approval-001**Is it a coincidence that Eddie Dombroski was the taxi driver who picked up the girls at the airport? On the surface, he is a human run-on sentence, with more relatives than smarts. But no other single driver knows more about Chicagoland roads. And not only the city proper: His regional knowledge has taken them, accurately & timely, to rural DuPage County (Argonne), Kane County (Elgin State Hospital), Olympia Fields (Tolentine) and every path from there to here. Constance has managed to make this odd coupling work to a tee…
