Alpha Omega M.D. – Episode #11

…We are here to raise a wonderful woman, wife, mother and human being to meet and be with our Lord and Savior…

Funeral-001

Attending the casket are six pallbearers and as well as members of the Strong and Jones Funeral Home, who try to blend in with the proceedings; innocently sticking out with businesslike insincerity, professional mourners, if you will.

Pastor Johnson, on the other hand, could not be more sincere, as if it were his blood sister, instead of sister in Christ, laying still and cold in front of him. He summons the word of God and the courage of David, to properly honor her memory.

BOOK PIC 6 002

A.O. & Maggie Lou

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered this day, a woefully sad day indeed, to raise a wonderful woman, wife, mother and human being to meet and be with our Lord and Savior, who sits at the right hand of God Who reigns in heaven, until the day he comes to judge the living and the dead; the day we believers anxiously await. Our dear Maggie Lou has the privilege to experience this first hand. She is surely a blessed addition to a heaven filled with cherubim and seraphim.”

“Amen, sweet Jesus!” shouts one amongst the many. Pastor Johnson glorifies the Lord most effectively, if not exceedingly.

“A man and Amen to the maker and taker, Father to all, lover of man, Wonderful Counselor!!!” Hands lifted to the heavens, hearts on fire, soaring past cathedral roof and the autumn clouds above.

Pastor adjusts the vest of his ivory three piece suit, runs his hands through his totally gray hair, and corrects his wire rimmed glasses, thereby composing himself as best he can for the rest of the service. It is a memorial observance for the ages.

And even though there are few dry eyes, the exception displayed mainly by those who attend because of obligation, guilt, or just to be seen, the sincere majority is left with a genuine sense of comfort, verily unsurpassed joy. The past hour has been pure revelation.

…Don’t give me that sources crap, sonny, tell us who tipped you off and I’ll give you the real story…

black & white

Greenwood-001

All lighting is trained on the house, 360 degrees and forever, but nothing happens immediately. The hibernating bats don’t like it and scatter into the dawning day, as do any ghostly apparitions from the house’s scary past.

The climax comes when the roof splits open and a fiery shaft shoots up into the dawning sky… and then it is gone, like it was never there.

“Turn off all the lights,” Daniels orders.

He and Constance hop out of the National Guard vehicle to take a closer look at the house. They are met by a young reporter carrying a camera and a notebook, “My name is John Krass from the Chicago Tribune and I cannot believe what I just saw. Can you explain that red light shooting out from the roof?”

In his peripheral view of the bewildering scene, Daniels sees L. Dick Cannon stumble out of the house in his pajamas. He sets out to corner him before he has time to collect his fragile wits, hoping he can make sense of the connection between Penty and this Science Fiction nutcase.

John Krass – Chicago Tribune

Meanwhile, Connie corners Krass. “Tell us how you found out about this operation and maybe we will give you a story that is fit to print,” Constance barters.

“I have my ways,” young Krass explains.

She has heard that before, from Daniels, “Don’t give me that sources crap, sonny. Tell us who tipped you off and I’ll give you some facts from which you can fashion some sort of factual story, instead of the horror tale that you are going to write.”

sources

“I have a ‘guy’ in the 2nd District who tipped me off. He dished that something big was going to go down here this morning. Boy did it ever!”

“Okay, I guess it doesn’t matter now…” she ditches the exact factual facts and goes on to tell the unsuspecting lad that they are  ghost hunters, hired to drive out spirits and demons at 5046, blah-blah-blah. He can get the real dirt from somebody else, which is advisable if he has a future as a reporter.

“Cool!” There is one born every minute.

Whether it is a newspaper legend like William Randolph Hearst or a cub reporter like John Krass who is looking for his big break; both want to put things down in black and white, in order for it to be read all over.

Forever Mastadon ~ Episode 167

Meanwhile…most of the neighborhood probably thinks someone is setting off fireworks…

Greenwood-001

As part of the lead grouping on this unlikely assault on a neighborhood residence, P.I. Constance and G-Man Jesse are outfitted with all the protective gear, like that afforded to the men who stormed the beach at Normandy, on that fateful day a mere seven years ago. Though National Guard presence is nominal, it is an indicator of how serious The Libby Affair had become.

Falling in the line behind, deuces are wild on this pre-dawn March morning; 2 x 2 are 20 Chicago police cruisers each with two men inside, too jacked-up on thick black coffee in anticipation of some bigtime action. Some of the old-timers liken this raid to the Prohibition runs in the days of Dillinger & Capone.

Chicago

You might think that mobilizing 2 shifts of an entire police force would be enough, but  R-6 Sikorsky military helicopters are hovering over Lake Michigan, due east of the 5000 block of south Greenwood just in case. No one, including the master planners, knows what will exactly go down.

Over the police frequency Daniels gives the marching orders, “After we shoot the concussion shells into each floor, I want all vehicles to focus their spotlights at every square inch of that house — from the north and  the south and the street and especially the alley.”

The nondestructive bomb, intended to stun everything inside rockets through the side entrance, the second floor bathroom window and a third floor bedroom, unleashing a series of prodigious thumps, with but small puffs of smoke. Other than being lit up like a Christmas tree, most of the neighborhood probably thinks someone is setting off fireworks

????????????????????????????????????

… But certainly not anyone inside this building under siege.

All lighting is trained on the house, 360 degrees and forever, but nothing happens immediately. The hibernating bats don’t like it and scatter into the dawning day, as do any ghostly apparitions from the house’s scary past.

…R. Worth Moore is a Floridian from the soles of his wingtips to the tip top of his top hat…

Southern Gentleman

The way that Fanny left things, when she was preparing to come back up to Chicago, was to leave the address of Martin Kamen’s campus quarters, along with the telephone which Worth Moore already had. In the course of doing a simple follow-up on her Lewis State Bank investigation, calling up to Chicago, he learned that Fanny was in the hospital from William, who has been the only one home for a the better part of a week.

Unlike a normal person, who would mail off a get well card or call the hospital with the hope of speaking to the patient in room 314, Attorney Moore turns it into an opportunity for a late winter excursion.

Those wacky folks from Tallahassee have the habit of popping in on friends, unannounced. Hailing from Austin Texas, Ace Bannion at least talked to Constance before flying back into her life. But R. Worth Moore is a Floridian from the soles of his wingtips to the tip top of his top hat and just before lunch at Saint Anthony he drops in to pay Fanny a visit.

“I had a convention to go to,” is his excuse. He is lying, but in a well-meaning way.

He has does his best to empty the gift shop on the way up to the third floor. Fanny and her roommate Edie now have a room adorned with an Ecuadorian orchid and a macramé owl wall hanging imported from Arabia.

“Who is this charming man, Fanny,” asks Edie? “They don’t make true gentlemen like him here in Chicago.”

“Edie Dombroski, this is Attorney R. Worth Moore from my hometown of Tallahassee. I worked a couple cases for him this month, the reason I was away for so long.”

“I must say Mr. Moore you do have fine taste in women,” she and Fanny get along famously, while her recovering husband harbors a married mans’ crush; it is complicated. “You know Fanny, between this man and Connie’s Ace Bannion, it’s a wonder that neither one of you have tied the knot.”

Forever Mastadon ~ Episode 151

…How could such an imperfect creature like Eddie D. not jump at the chance of fame, fortune & immortality? It’s an insult to his craftiness…

Perfect is not the way these fine folks should be looking at things. There remains an interested party to certain things tied to the Libby Affair, which he can currently see or know. Pentateuch is a notoriously bad loser, even though he has an extended stay on Earth to his credit, rather than a permanent Lake of Fire address. Unlike the Divine One, who views a human lifetime as a blink of His eye, the Dark Deceiver treats every moment like it is his last. And that lightning bolt loss he suffered at Tolentine… he cannot let it go.

Even his dabbling in a phony bologna cult like The Church of Spiritual Engineering  does not loosen his grip on the satisfaction gained by getting even; a mere toy in the game of tripping up greater mankind, not just this current group of aggravating agitators.

get_even

Eddie Dombroski is a known quantity in this storyline, a significant player from Penty’s first contact with that pesky private eye from Florida’s panhandle, which by the way, is a favorite hangout of his oldest and wealthiest sinners. He has kept an evil eye on Dombroski, especially since Eddie turned down the opportunity to trade his eternal soul for a king’s life of fame and fortune. How could such an imperfect creature not jump at that chance? It’s an insult to his craftiness.

As is Penty’s want, a daily check on this (f)ailing soul can only be a good thing. He might even have the chance to swoop in a snag that soul for the promise of one or ten more years of life. OR catch a whiff of who might still be in contact with the former chauffeur to the Libbyites.

Pondering Penty

Pondering Penty

He ponders, like demons ponder: ‘For one, Constance Caraway is a constant, like the proverbial pestilences of Egypt. She seems plagued by guilt, such a uniquely human emotion, though in this case, it has spawned another condition named, loyalty.

‘This Ace Bannion is a curious addition to this malevolent mix. And whatever happened to that empty-headed female twit of a sidekick? She was so fun to tweak, so predictable. But this Ace, a walking ego an two feet, is unpredictable with an historic heroic bent. He warrants my special concern.

‘And what of this Billy Graham? You must be kidding me! I thought he was going to just another flash in the pan, bible-stumping, do-gooder. What interest could he have with a dying commoner like Eddie? What is a national figure like him doing here?’

When things don’t add up, or when he can’t skew the numbers, it bothers him to no end.

… Cool your heels, play tiddlywinks, take a plane ride, anything, just stay out of the damned devil’s sight…

“Penty is getting plenty close,” Agent Daniels is warning Constance about their adversary’s new proximity. “I’m hoping that he isn’t able to track me sooner than 24 hours, ‘cause if I don’t stay in one spot, he can only guess.”

“You’re not from around here, are you?”

“You mean he is back at 33 LaSalle?”

“No, he is 10 blocks north of you at 5046 Greenwood.”

She is not a native Chicagoan so some quick counting of streets leads her to conclude, “Does he know something we aren’t aware of?”

“I think he is using this Midwest location as a centralized contact point for those of us not given to spatial displacement.”

“Huh, say what?” spatial what? “How is it that you know where he’s at?”

“I have my ways.”

“I should have known.”

“You should have known,” Ace’s is playing the waiting game, mostly taking his Beechcraft out for daily spins up and around Lake Michigan, or basically wherever he pleases. He feels his skills are being wasted… until there is something to do.

“If you’re so good at second guessing, what do you think we are going to do next?”

“We’re going to fly down to Florida and see what Fanny is up to?”

“That may not be such a good idea — I believe she is carrying a gun now.”

“Scratch that idea,” he is not high on Fan’s list of favorite people at this moment and she has had time to stew about things.

“You are going to drive us over to that house on Greenwood, stake it out for a bit, kick the tires, rattle his cage, you know boogie with the boogie man.” Constance knows that Agent Daniels must be moving on to some other assignment any day and someone has to keep tabs on the Great Deceiver.

“That may not be the greatest idea Miss Caraway. As soon as you underestimate him, he will take a bite out of you,” warns Daniels. “I realize that you guys are restless, but Libby is working on his coming out party and you do not want to mess that up. Cool your heels: Watch Penty from afar, do property searches on the Greenwood house, play tiddlywinks, take a plane ride, anything, just stay out of his sight. Resist the urge to tinker and leave ‘him’ to me.”

Forever Mastadon ~ Episode 148

… “I want you to be a part of my next crusade.” Billy Graham has his sights set on revival…

“I want you to be a part of my next crusade.” Without concern or compunction, Billy Graham has his sights set on revival. It has been 45 years since the last “Great Awakening” and considering the troubling direction of the world, the frequency of wars, the coming age of information, moral decay, etc…, the time has come for the next such amassing of God’s people. “I am gathering the world’s most influential leaders in their fields of expertise, and not just the blatantly religious. You, Willard Libby represent perhaps the fittest example of proving the case for Christ; your Carbon-14 findings will rock secular strongholds down to the quick.”

“I am flattered that you would consider me,” Libby’s modest style is what makes him so attractive to Graham, who is not seeking grandstanders, only defenders of the Word. “You are aware that the fantastic people who are working on my behalf (and Martin) believe they are having encounters with the Devil?”

“As a matter of fact, I have spoken to most of them, the CIA guy foremost of those; and I must tell you that it makes me shudder to think how bold Satan has become. But that is what I’m talking about: the world needs to know exactly what they are up against. When asked, 99% of people on Earth don’t believe that Satan exists, which is just the way he wants it.

“And you won’t hear about this stuff on radio news broadcasts or on television either. The truth needs to be told.”

“You can count me in, though the vehicle with which I tell the world about my half-life discoveries is not what I envisioned.”

“We don’t have the plan for our lives; God is the author of the world he has created with His hands, for His great pleasure.”

“When do we start,” he puts his arm around Martin, anxious to escape his imposed imprisonment.

“Spring is around the corner in the Northern Hemisphere and we are in the process of securing venues for the crusade. We have to expect that the Lord will be sending a million seekers our way, with the hope of attracting a billion more!”

“I am into large-scale thinking, but you best leave the Bible thumping for folks who know what they are talking about.”

“Listen and learn, my friend,” the evangelist exhorts, “your job is to bend the ears of the technological intolerant.”
