Constance Caraway P.I. ~ Episode 120

Chapter Eleven

 MANEUVERS

…What puzzles Pentateuch most is how those pesky gnats were able to locate his papal perch in the first place…

Every war is won or lost by first fighting battles; sneak attacks, ambushes or crusades, campaigns. And depending on which side you are on, sometimes it doesn’t feel very good.

Now for Pentateuch, it is one thing to be put in his place by the Divine One, Canisso’s untimely demise being an example. It is something that he has had to accept as a precondition for his status as chief Earthly foil. Satans Place-001But to have been pricked in the side by mere humans, as is the case with the recent loss of his handy habitation in Rome, is utterly unacceptable.

What puzzles him the most is how those pesky gnats were able to locate his papal perch in the first place. It is not like he is the owner of a worldwide franchise: a SATAN’S PLACE sign hanging on the front of each of his lairs.

Being known is an unwelcome byproduct of his infamous misdeeds. It is not a situation that he is comfortable with. The fewer human beings who see him as real the better; he can prowl and devour much easier with mass ignorance.

The other nagging issue is: if he has squashed the threat to his Great Deception, then why does it feel like the battle continues to rage on, is not as over as it appears. This whole Libby Affair has shaken him to his fireproof boots, even to his darkened doorsteps.

He really misses that Canisso guy, having had good confidence in the area of creature loyalty. He is not the first company casualty in the course of human history, of those devoted to Pentateuch, but as it applies to the Great Deception, there is no replacing Canisso.

Come to think of it, most of his current problems seem to revolve around the proximity (or lack of said) and the one named Cephus. The Divine One (GOD) didn’t strike him down at Tolentine like He did Canisso, nor was Cephus at Via Catone the night of the annihilation as he was expected to be.

…‘Mamma told me not to come’, he thinks to himself during this no-turning-back moment…

Daniels/Cephus will set aside his apprehension for later, having been met in the hall by Canisso/Wolfgram, dedicated defender of “The Great Deception”.

“This way Cephus, you have been expected.”

Prior to this, Daniels’ (as an informant/plant) view of Vincent Wolfgram was completely different, more of a fellow worker than this administrative visage. In fact, he cannot remember seeing the man on this side of the Atlantic before; previous informational “leaks” about Pope- doings never involved individuals, in that stead, he would utilize the more popular “drop” method.

In his work at the Vatican Communications Department, he is known as Bernard Spencer, an American electronic specialist in this new age of the telephone and television; yet another alias name, leaving one to wonder how he keeps them straight. He can know what/when he wants to know it, without being questioned by papal higher ups. He has amazing security clearance on either side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Cephus, not the Noah-of-old descendant, enters a vast chamber filled to the brim with solid gold items, so brilliant yet quite unnerving. ‘Mamma told me not to come’, he thinks to himself during this no-turning-back moment.

“Come forward Cephus,” an echoing voice rains down from a ceiling-less throne. Pentateuch has command of his world, asking no quarter, expecting unquestioned obedience. “I have an important matter for you to take care of, nothing to do with the pope,” he says without reverence.

“You must think I can do the job,” his voice quakes slightly.

“I want you to extricate the human Mary Joseph Franks from her lair. I believe that she is under the protection of the Divine One, which is a formidable obstacle. And as she has already made Canisso’s acquaintance, I need some other human for the intervention.”

…Agent Daniels – The Man of Many Hats…

The OSS (Office of Strategic Services) forerunner of the modern CIA, had served its purpose during the recently concluded world war; somebody had to keep the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines on the same page. There is a danger when separate organizations do not share intelligence and the OSS virtually forced them to. If that essential fact is a lesson learned, then it becomes an important memo to the future and heeding it is highly recommended.

In the case of the Libby Affair, the military plays no part. Domestic matters are left to people like Agent Daniels, who operate on the opaque fringes of the world stage; no first names required.

As Cephus, to Forever Mastadon, Agent Daniels is a Vatican insider who leaks PapalWorld Agnostica-001 matters. He provides advanced notice of where the Pope is going and what his agenda is. Keeping track of the Pope is one of “their” obsessions. And it is because of this usefulness, that Cephus/Daniels/Rogue is being brought into the inner circle, not of FM but the mysterious World Agnostica Unlimited.

Agnostica has not made the connection between the name Cephus and the bible; had they dug a little deeper they would have discovered that Cephus was Noah’s fourth son, Noah representing God’s greatest display of omnipotence; all of Satan’s (best) vanquished in favor of God’s (hand picked), i.e. The Flood.

Inside an innocuous building on Via Catone,  in not one of Rome’s finer neighborhoods, Cephus has been summoned to the top floor. There is no elevator to confuse what number that floor would be. Elevators were not invented in the 19th century A.D. and judging by the well-worn Italian granite steps, by centuries of heavy use, it is in accord with the outwardly abandoned appearance on this sleepy public way.The_Great_Deception

Be it at four or five stories, the steps end at the top, yet the mean temperature has dropped with every level, from a moderate 16 outdoor degrees Celsius to minus 2, below freezing, without the assistance of compressed ammonia.

Daniels/Cephus will set aside any possible explanation for later, having been met in the hall by Canisso/Wolfgram, dedicated defender of “The Great Deception”.

We need to know where your loyalties lay, a little matter called trust...

Loyalty by Kavich Art

“FM has been around that long… we are talking some 1400 odd years?” Martin does the historical math.

Agent Daniels pontificates  on what he knows about “things”.

“Prior to modern communication, the FOREVER MASTADON outfit did not have the World Agnostica Unlimited corporate tag; what’s in a name when you can operate covertly. That is more than one reason the CIA was created three years ago; the OSS needed a post-war overhaul and I jumped at the chance,” when you’re good at something. “And though I worked for the FBI for the last 10 years they are too closely tied to Constitutional law to be effective. Some ventures require extra-legal latitude. This situation is one such undertaking,” insists the man whose CIA codename is “The Rogue”.

“Were you aware that Willard Libby was a target for FM?” Constance narrows down the time-line. “And did you know that Libby had regular conversations with the FBI?”

“I did and I did, but I could not jeopardize my cover, plus I had no idea where that whole thing was headed. Libby seemed like a pretty small fish to me, not knowing of his involvement with the Manhattan Project or this whole carbon dating deal. As far as this operative is concerned, this is my only priority and no option is off the table.”

“So you just let it happen?” Martin experiences the harsh reality of the ‘greater good’ or ‘the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few’. “Well for your information, we just returned from finding Willard Libby—and he is but a shell of his former self.”

Daniels is taken aback, “You mean you didn’t bring him back?”

“Disappointed are we?” Constance is not impressed with what she is hearing thus far.We need to know where your loyalties lay, a little matter called trust.

“I may be paid by both sides, but my employer of origin is in Washington D.C. and I can be taken out of action at any time, without discussion by either side.” His job security is tenuous at best. “It is everyone’s interest to include me in your plans. I bring a certain skill set to the game.”

“We could use the help,” Constance admits, “but Libby is off limits to the Feds, the people above you. If there is a chance that he can recover, we—Fanny, Martin and I, need to look out after HIS best interest.”

“Understood and I agree. What Washington knows about Libby comes as a result of my input, so I will follow your lead,” Agent Daniels knows that he is not operating from a position of power, often left to speculate on what’s what. “Something must be up because they have me flying back to Rome.”

The role of a double agent is precariously fluid, especially as it applies to his placement inside a group called FOREVER MASTADON.

…For the last year and a half Agent Daniels has been embedded in a foreign organization called FOREVER MASTADON, FM for short… not the Ice Age elephant…

Agent Daniels of the FBI continues to explain his presence at 6137 Kimbark, i.e. what he knows about Forever Mastadon..

“And your connection to Libby or the other possible reasons you have popped in?” It is Constance’s job to vet even the most credentialed of spies.

“I am a mole inside the Pope’s inner circle (as Bernard Spencer) becoming involved with Willard Libby only because of Pacelli’s participation at Tolentine. FM needs to know what information Pope Pius is going to receive.”

F & M was written in soap on that mirror at White Castle,” she reminds Martin quietly, as they carefully confirm this man’s legitimacy, with one hand still poised on her Beretta 1951, holstered to her upper thigh. Only Fanny knows that Constance is packing heat.

“One of FM’s greater goals is to stifle the entire planet’s belief in God, a longtime Communist manifesto, but taken to the extreme by these “people”.” Daniels used the closed-quote signing for his last word.

“Are you inferring that some of FM consists of off-world elements,” Constance has her own suspicions about that ever since 33 North LaSalle.

“I have penetrated Mastadon as a respected ally in Rome, Italy. I go by the name “Cephus”, and I gather from chatter amongst the other foot soldiers that they are convinced of a struggle between good and evil, at the highest level,” the man of many names, as we will find out, explains. “As it turns out, being labeled as evil does not seem to bother these people; they have a leader that they believe in and good vs evilare dedicated to.

“I am doing my best to find out who that is and how high it goes.”

“It cannot get much higher, believe me,” Constance speaks from experience. “Do you think it’s not a coincidence that FM is based in Italy and its proximity to The Vatican?”

“Oh my no; the Holy Roman Catholic Church has been a high value target for FM since before the Middle Ages.”

…“Who says we’re not working for ourselves, isn’t that right, Bing Crosby…

“Do you know who you’ve kidnapped?” a shrewd Fanny asks.

The two men in the front seat seem not to care who she is.

“Some wacky redhead?” guesses number one thug. “Are you packin’ heat.?”

“Maybe and My name is Mary Pickford.”

“Eating at a White Castle, right… And we’re movie stars too,” cracks brute number two.

Obviously the men, who have taken Fanny, are just following orders. Maybe she can play them.

“I know the name of your boss.”

“Who says we’re not working for ourselves, isn’t that right, Bing Crosby?”

“That’s right, Gene Kelly,” says the driver.

“You guys are Hi-larious,” she answers back.

“Who are we working for Miss Pickford, I mean Miss Caraway?” they taunt.

They’ve got the wrong girl, but Fanny strings them along, needing to make her response count, while trying to recall a name she picked up on three hours ago at Tolentine, “Vincent, yes you are associates of Mr. Vincent.”

They look at each with vacated expressions.

“Cat got your tongue?”

Again there is stunned silence.

“My people are coming for me.”

“Do we look worried Miss Caraway?”

She shows them her Visitors badge, stuck to her sweater. It reads “Renwick”.

“This ain’t the Caraway broad, stupid!”

The black Cadillac pulls up to the first telephone booth they see. “Bing” drops in a single dime, confirming that it is indeed a local call. His demonstrative actions indicate frustration. He returns to the passenger side telling his mate, “O’Malley’s Garage on Western,” turning to their snatch, “tell us what you did with the bag, whoever you are.”

“You guys don’t have a clue, do you?” She can play dumb too.

“The briefcase you took from the convent, Red, where is it?”

She holds out her empty and bound hands.

“Stop the car.”

Better listen to him Bing. You and Mr. Kelly are in way over your heads. The coppers will be looking for you.”

“Get out, now! You ain’t worth the trouble.”

Fanny is unceremoniously kicked to the curb

Crosby blares at Kelly, “We grabbed the wrong dame!
