Alpha Omega M.D. – Episode #232

…Attorney James Ferrell stands, tall in the glow of justice done, with a feeling that he has just participated in a piece of genuine history…

Suffrage Part One-001

“Your honor, I would ask the court to dismiss the charges against my client,” pleads attorney Ferrell on behalf of the 34 year old woman seated beside him, having returned to Florida to face the court. “No crime has been committed.”

Courtroom Sketch

“I object, your honor! Mr. Ferrell obviously has an interest in Miss Paul’s cause, even to the point ignoring the laws of the state of Florida,” entreats an assistant district attorney.

“Normally I would agree with you, counselor,” states the robed arbiter, who has soberly (and secretly) already reviewed this case and nothing anyone will say this day will change his decision, “but I have interviewed witnesses of that January meeting and I believe that Miss Paul had no way of knowing the magnitude of response she would receive, meaning the size of her audience and the logistics required thereof.” He reaches for a paper handed him by the bailiff, holding it up for interested parties to see. “This a copy of a permit issued in the name of Alice Paul, requesting and granted permission to hold a rally on 20 February 1920. There are no stated restrictions herein.”

“Why didn’t you tell me she had a permit!” yells the chief of police at his lead detective. They are caught with their pants down, having had proceeded with their hearts, not their heads.

“I am not in favor of wasting the time of this court, not to mention forcing this woman with great inconvenience,” castigates the judge. He reviews the evidence, the paper trail, if you will, continuing, “I should never have allowed this to degrade to this point Miss Paul, and the state of Florida owes you an apology. Case dismissed. This court is adjourned.”

“All rise,” urges the bailiff. The entire chamber does so, populated mostly by credentialed newspapermen and photographers, interested in this story of national merit.

James Ferrell stands, tall in the glow of justice done, with a feeling that he has just participated in a piece of genuine history.

“Americans Who Tell the Truth” Robert Shetterly

“I want to thank you,” Alice Paul tells her Florida attorney, not a stranger to courtrooms around some of the other 47 states, but such is her dedication to the cause of suffrage. “I never know how situations like this are going to turn out.”

“You can thank Mrs. Love for my services and as for me; I guess I just happened to be holding the goose when it laid the golden egg.”

“I’ve been called many names, but never a goose, Mr. Ferrell, but if I have enhanced your career, I am pleased. Perhaps this is a precedent and I can be left alone.”

“Your cause is just and please call on me if you are wronged again.”

“Forgive me if I if I wish never to see another courtroom.”

“Yes, I see your point. You deserve better.”

Good things happen to good people.

…“Has the entire world gone mad?” There is no stopping this Renaissance caveman…

World Gone Mad

“Someone is going to pay for this… that Paul broad, yeah, I’ll walk her to the station if I have to!”

So he bravely enters the rotunda, but this time he is recognized and they do not allow him to pass. The guards, already in place at the state run institution, are merely listening to Alice Paul, nary viewing her as any threat to society, leaving her to complete her forum. But not Sam Schuster, damn it; she is embarrassing him at every turn and he is out his police car! He has to walk back to the TPD station, to retrieve backup, to capture that evil riotous creature that is polluting the minds of previously content women of his city.

Besides being out of breath when he gets there, he receives little support when does. ‘We have to go home in an hour and we want to sleep in our own beds,’ is what he hears from his younger, married charges. There is but one single man on duty, and guess what———his girlfriend is at the rally, ‘I am ‘bout ready to ask that girl to marry me and you want me to arrest a woman like Alice Paul. Jeez, she is a national celebrity.’

Suffrage Part One-001

“Has the entire world gone mad?” There is no stopping this Renaissance caveman. “I’ll put all of you on report for insubordination,” he says, as he grabs the only available police car to return to the capitol rotunda, where he finds his suspect glad handing her supporters. “You are under arrest for:” he lists, “inciting a riot, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest, assaulting an officer of the law, violating the public meeting law, and causing the property of the city of Tallahassee to be stolen.” The last of his “charges” sum up their validity, but he follows through with the seizure regardless.

Alice Paul spends all of an hour behind bars, with bail raised by no less than 50 women and even a handful of men who come forward at the urging of their spouses.

…”Hell, give ‘em a vote and before you know it, they’ll elect one of their own“…

Suffrage Part One-001

Led by the fiery Paul, 300 women and growing, others joining along the one-mile walk from the city park to the capitol building, make their way noisily, some toting signs and banners. Only the deaf, dumb and blind are able to ignore this feminine spectacle, the rest either dumbfounded or unable to get their automobile or carriage around the protesters.

Suffrage Poster-001       One of those inconvenienced is the chief of police, Sam Schuster. He has had a couple of his men watching what he thought was going to be a small dainty meeting. But he is on his way home, home to a dinner-less kitchen table, now thwarted by a huge crowd, Model Ts backed up for as far as the eye can see.

There is plenty of time for him to figure out what he can charge organizers with, though he is wise to let this run its course, for fear of being beaten by purses and parasols. On average, the chief runs a tight ship, nonsense and mischief are usually short-lived. He considers this nonsense on a very large scale. ‘We want the right to vote, ha, that’s a good one. What does a woman know about politics? Hell, give ‘em a vote and before you know it, they’ll elect one of their own.’ He is speaking to himself, about to change his mind. ‘This is bullshit——–I’m going to break up this skirt party, arrest that woman fillin’ their heads with foolishness.’

He gets out of police car, puts on his official police hat, grabs his TPD megaphone and wades into the sea of estrogen driven humanity. He goes unnoticed, for the most part; an occasional dirty look cast his way, until he has achieved the podium on the stairs of the Capitol there for all the five hundred to see.

He turns to the crowd, speaking in the amplified cone, “Please disperse immediately! You are illegally blocking traffic!”

Break it up!

Alice Paul thinks on her feet, telling them, “That’s all right ladies, let’s go inside!”  She turns straight away, followed directly by her audience. It is like cattle on the drive and Sam Schuster does not know what do, stumbling, mumbling, finally trampled into the concrete like so many ants.

When the dust clears, he shakes off his grogginess and heads for his car, well if he had one. It is not where he left it, the traffic jam having since broken up, and someone is joyriding in a black Model T Ford with big white a star and the letters TPD on each door. “Someone is going to pay for this……….that Paul broad, yeah, I’ll walk her to the station if I have to!”

Alpha Omega M.D. – Episode #229

… As the men of the Florida Panhandle arrange strange combinations of meat and condiment on their day-old bread, reality has set in…

Suffrage Part One-001

Just what was this riot that Alice Paul stands accused of sanctioning?

After the threat of the influenza had run its course, removing the stigma of human contact, especially public gatherings, Alice and her staunchest supporters began touring state capitols, hoping to influence legislators, the makers of law that would bring the rights of women up to snuff.

On a cool late winter day, one where if you are going to listen to a speech at an outdoor venue, you must really want to hear what is going to be said and hundreds do; dresses blowing in the northerly breezes, gloved hands clapping with every “sisters for equality” reference. There are a lot of households in Tallahassee that will be going without Saturday evening dinner and hundreds of men who are outraged at the audacity of their women. But this event had been touted for several weeks, so it is likely that these men thought the womens’ movement, this National Woman’s Party, was just a lot of hot air, not about to amount to anything.

As they arrange strange combinations of meat and condiment on their day-old bread, reality has set in.

“Where is our dignity, ladies? Are we doomed to be chained to the kitchen stove forever, only to have our hands go raw from dishwater or the never ending laundry? And then watch our men leave the house to go out and vote, only to come home half liquored up, ordering us around like servants.

“It is time——–no past time for the women of America to have equal rights!” Alice Paul is hardly a striking figure, somewhat ordinary, with a dark hair and complexion, dark eyes focused on her goal. But there is no denying her effectiveness as a speaker, able to arouse the sleeping spirit of the female gender, causing them to admit infuriation for the first time. “Let’s take our cause to the steps of Florida’s state legislature! It is time that the “good old boys club” learns that one half of their constituency is oppressed, but not powerless!”

Alpha Omega M.D. – Episode #228

…The right to vote on offices and issues that relate to women is important, particularly when one half of the population have no say in their own self-determination…

“Homage to Suffragette” by Bernard van Lierop

Meanwhile Caption-001

… Attorney James Ferrell is tackling a case that no other lawyer wants to get within an addendum of; woman’s suffrage in the South, a contradiction of terms in itself. On a campaign through the Panhandle, having served at the core of the movement in England, Alice Paul has been arrested for inciting a riot; not that a riot of women is a huge threat to mankind, but the protest marches that seem to follow her around the country have law enforcement on their ready, and in the South, that means, ‘Not in my town.’

The right to vote on offices and issues that relate to women is important, particularly when one half of the population have no say in their own self-determination. Something has to be said, someone has to take a stand – something has to be done. And unpopular as it is, in an entrenchment of tradition, shaking the branches of a tree is the best way to reap the fruit.

And despite her stint in the Cinderella troupe, Phoebe Love has kept a close eye toward this matter, entreating advisor Ferrell not to allow this gross miscarriage of justice to languish in the Florida court system; even to the point that Mrs. Love funds Paul’s defense.

Now these are very strong terms for a woman who has been a stay-at-home wife for her forty year marriage, none of which she ever did not have a say on who, what, when, where, how, or why. A vote, on whether Woodrow Wilson should remain as President or be replaced by Charles Evans Hughes in the election of 1916 was not hers to have.

That is why women like Alice Paul place themselves at risk, utilizing shock tactics and not-so-subtly nudging society into noticing injustice. Men look at her with disdain, largely fearing what equal rights would do to their present tidy arrangement. And it is not like many women embrace her radical concepts.

Equal rights;

  1. Does that mean I will have get a job and trade my skirts in for overalls?
  2. Or fight in a war, how horrible?
Such is the misunderstanding, misinformation in this “miss and mrs.” issue.
