Constance Caraway P.I. ~ Episode 186

…Gone is the spring-like weather of 2 days ago; ‘sleety days and Mondays always get me down’, but nothing will dampen the spirits of the Libbyites…

It is the third night of the Graham Great Chicago Crusade and it has been decided, byLibbyites-001 a straw poll of the Libbyites incl.: Constance, Fanny, Martin, James/Daniels, Sister Mary Joseph, Eddie, Edie, Ace and Worth to attend in unison, a united front of those whose lives will be forever altered by this experience.

Kimbark roomie, the elusive William the piano teacher, has a date with the Dean’s daughter.

Goldwyn the Jr. has two nights in the can (movie lingo for completed scenes) and is capturing the true flavor of what it means to come to Jesus. His wife of one year Jennifer is welcomed as an honorary Libbyite.

Gone is the spring-like weather of 2 days ago; ‘sleety days and Mondays always get me down’, but there is not anything that will dampen their spirits. Ever indulgent Ace Bannion has chartered a luxury motor coach for the occasion and with 100% attendance, good times they are a flowing. Though their guard is ever vigilant, the strange twists and death-defying turns are shelved for the Crusade finale, to make way for a good old fashioned southern worship service. Billy has promised them a special night.

The Libbyites occupy the owner suite, an enclosed luxury booth, one of fifty ringing the mezzanine, with the absolute best view (center ice). It also provides them self-service security, so they can be as carefree as possible.

If it were a Blackhawk Hockey game, team owners Arthur Wirtz or James Norris may be front and center with their family, friends and cronies, but the team is bad, bad, worse and they are on a long two week road trip. Thank God for small favors; those pesky sportswriters will fly away, fly away on the West Coast Swing with the team.

…The hard working people of the Midwest will be spared a case of the dreaded Dianetics, which should not be confused with Diuretics…

The Chicago Stadium holds over 21,000 people, for events like these that do not require a wooden court, skating ice, or rodeo dirt. Political conventions and circuses also take advantage of its cavernous interior. Truman was not nominated there, but Democrat F.D.R. was. Economically ill-timed Herbert Hoover and ‘don’t count your chickens before they hatch’ Thomas Dewey were Republican conventioneers. And rumor has it that idyllic Roy Rodgers lassoed to Dale Evans into matrimony, wowing the crowd with his six-shooter… how can a girl resist?

And isn’t it a crying shame, that the very run of Billy Graham Crusades takes the dates once promised to the departed Langston Richard Cannon and his Spiritual Engineering gaggle. The hard working people of the Midwest will be spared a case of the dreaded Dianetics, which should not be confused with Diuretics, though they have similar results in different parts of the body, 2 feet apart.

One thing for sure, the many thousands seeking charismatic attention will not be causing much of a ruckus on their own. Neither would the weather on Saturday March 10th, with a warm front pushing the thermometer near 60 degrees, though the penalty paid comes in the form of a foggy drizzle. But signs of an early spring are a gift from God, having paid the price of a usually harsh upper Midwest winter.

The stage is set for another attempt at causing revival. Actual revivals are normally born of prohibitionist personalities, because it is easier to guilt a person into becoming a believer, if you can point out their debauched behavior. Graham, however, has found more upbeat ways to bring his audience closer to their God, like convincing a life-long scientist to profess his belief that, in his field of expertise, he readily accepts the parameters of a divine Creation over the speculation of random Evolution.

Alongside Willard Libby will be a 500 person choir, a full orchestra (both recruit locally) Youth for Christ International speaker Charles Templeton and popular baritone George Beverly Shea.

Footnote: More than a few of the people attending each evening mention President Truman’s radio address touting Billy Graham as the reason they came out.

…Billy can’t let go of that unusual name thing, “Ajax Bannion — do you know that Ajax was a Greek warrior?…

“Reverend Graham, it looks like you found yourself an airplane driver.”

Fanny Renwick should be jumping up and down on her hospital bed, if she were only within earshot of the meeting.

“It sounds like a wonderful opportunity Ajax Bannion,” Constance speaks for the group. “Between Fanny and me, I think we can keep Martin in line.”

“Ajax? I thought your name was Ace,” Graham’s Southern drawl angling toward the truth behind the man.

“Never mind that for now Mr. Graham,” the flyer is already planning for things skyward. “I flew out at O’Hare Field the other day and I saw this slick Basler BT-67, it’s a refurbished C-47 with Pratt & Whitney turbines, a versatile plane with transatlantic capabilities… and I am C-47 certified.”

“I know the Holy Bible inside and out Bannion, but when it comes to airplanes, I defer to those who fly them. If you believe this plane can transport me and my staff, let’s buy it and you can fly it.”

“It was too pricey for my pocketbook, but if you’ve got $65,000 buckaroos?” Ace wants to fly that plane. “I think I can jew the owner down to 60, he seemed hot to trot.”

“Well I need the flexibility to go where I want, when I want and I’d rather have fixed costs for air travel,” he must operate his ministry like a business in order to have order. But he still can’t let go of that unusual name thing, “Ajax Bannion — do you know that Ajax was a Greek warrior in the time of the Trojan War, I believe.”

“No Reverend Graham, my mother really liked the scouring powder.”

“Really, I never would have guessed!” he concludes.

“Why don’t I fly us out there to see that airplane?”

“When Jesus called Peter to join him, he said, ‘Drop your nets and come follow me’. I am certainly no Messiah, but Ajax Bannion, ‘let’s soar on the wings of eagles’.”

And so the die is cast. The Billy Graham Crusades gets its own bird.

…Eddie D. has lost a lot of weight, along with most of that quaint enthusiasm which fuels all those stories he relates…

Get well-001Being tastefully prompt is a virtue and at 5:55 PM on this early March evening, three interested parties have meet in the lobby and ride the elevator to the convalescent floor of Saint Anthony Hospital. In the confined privacy of the hydraulic lift, Billy Graham lays out his vision of his latest campaign for convert souls for the sake of Christ. He has lined up an impressive list of champions of the faith, as well as this growing harvest field of scientific substantiation. This young lion of evangelism is well aware that it is the “logical” mind, which must see tangible proof before believing on anything, holds the key to the hearts and minds of the coming generation.

And one thing he knows well is how to assemble crowds, point-in-fact the thousands that are flocking to his Crusades. The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association has an extensive radio reach in its own right, but it is the support from media giants like William Randolph Hearst that helps push him over the top.

In the course of the lift up to the third floor, Constance and Ace receive the background info for how Willard Libby is going to present his carbon dating truths to the world (The Billy Graham Crusades). It is the fastest way to disseminate what he knows to the widest audience, as opposed to the 300 stuffed shirts and the editors of Popular Science Monthly, his original launching pad.

As for Eddie Dombroski himself, he is pretty much a slave to the ventilator that keeps him breathing and the intravenous tubes that supply his nutrients. He has lost a lot of weight, along with most of that quaint enthusiasm which fuels all those stories he relates. He knows there are people in the room, but cannot focus well enough to interact with them. No stories this day.

… “I want you to be a part of my next crusade.” Billy Graham has his sights set on revival…

“I want you to be a part of my next crusade.” Without concern or compunction, Billy Graham has his sights set on revival. It has been 45 years since the last “Great Awakening” and considering the troubling direction of the world, the frequency of wars, the coming age of information, moral decay, etc…, the time has come for the next such amassing of God’s people. “I am gathering the world’s most influential leaders in their fields of expertise, and not just the blatantly religious. You, Willard Libby represent perhaps the fittest example of proving the case for Christ; your Carbon-14 findings will rock secular strongholds down to the quick.”

“I am flattered that you would consider me,” Libby’s modest style is what makes him so attractive to Graham, who is not seeking grandstanders, only defenders of the Word. “You are aware that the fantastic people who are working on my behalf (and Martin) believe they are having encounters with the Devil?”

“As a matter of fact, I have spoken to most of them, the CIA guy foremost of those; and I must tell you that it makes me shudder to think how bold Satan has become. But that is what I’m talking about: the world needs to know exactly what they are up against. When asked, 99% of people on Earth don’t believe that Satan exists, which is just the way he wants it.

“And you won’t hear about this stuff on radio news broadcasts or on television either. The truth needs to be told.”

“You can count me in, though the vehicle with which I tell the world about my half-life discoveries is not what I envisioned.”

“We don’t have the plan for our lives; God is the author of the world he has created with His hands, for His great pleasure.”

“When do WE start,” he puts his arm around Martin, anxious to escape his imposed imprisonment.

“Spring is around the corner in the Northern Hemisphere and we are in the process of securing venues for the crusade. We have to expect that the Lord will be sending a million seekers our way, with the hope of attracting a billion more!”

“I am into large-scale thinking, but you best leave the Bible thumping for folks who know what they are talking about.”

“Listen and learn, my friend,” the evangelist exhorts, “your job is to bend the ears of the technological intolerant.”

Constance Caraway P.I. ~ Episode 41

…“A cowboy’s work is never done, Miss Caraway…

Speaking with good guy Billy Graham proves to be the easier than the others. The young organizer of gospel spreading crusades, president of Northwestern Bible College and founder of his own Billy Graham Evangelistic Association is more than willing to find the time to answer questions about the events at Tolentine, as they relate to the missing biochemist.

“That Willard fellow was such an engaging man, please tell me that nothing bad has befallen him.” Graham is the type of Southern gentleman that radiates genuine.

“I want to thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to speak with me…..my family is such a big admirer of your work,” she cannot help be a bit star struck.

“A cowboy’s work is never done, Miss Caraway… I’ve got a huge flock of proverbial cattle to watch over..

“Can you magnify what your role was at that Tolentine meeting? Reverend Graham, my name is Martin David Kamen, Libby’s contemporary” Martin wants to enter in the discussion, rather lecture with a good dose catechism. They will get an earful, taking notes for good measure.

“Mister Libby wanted to pick my brain about Creation, as it relates to his work in the biochemical field. He had mentioned that he come upon some empirical evidence that the age of the God’s Universe is infinitely younger than is widely accepted in science, to which I sing a hearty AMEN!

“Here is an abridged version of what I have come to find out in my study on the topic, as it relates to Biblical truth:

“When God created the Universe as we know it, it took him just 6 of His days. How long His days are only God himself knows, but in comparison mankind exists in a mere blink of His eye; one second for God is like one of our generations. That is why it seems it takes him forever to take action, the whole slow to anger part of His nature……... (the case for Creation to be continued)

Crusades for Mass Salvation – A WIF Look into Billy Graham

Crusades for Mass Salvation

Billy Graham’s crusades – evangelistic campaigns conducted by Billy Graham between 1947 and 2005. Graham called them crusades, after the medieval Christian forces who conquered Jerusalem. Billy Graham conducted 417 crusades in 185 countries and territories on six continents. The first Billy Graham evangelistic campaign, held September 13–21, 1947, in the Civic Auditorium in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was attended by 6,000 people. He would rent a large venue, such as a stadium, park, or street. As the sessions became larger, he arranged a group of up to 5,000 people to sing in a choir. He would preach the gospel and invite people to come forward (a practice begun by Dwight L. Moody). Such people were called inquirers and were given the chance to speak one-on-one with a counselor, to clarify questions and pray together. The inquirers were often given a copy of the Gospel of John or a Bible study booklet. In Moscow, in 1992, one-quarter of the 155,000 people in Graham’s audience went forward at his call. During his crusades, he has frequently used the altar call song, “Just As I Am“.

Just As I Am

Over 58 years, Billy Graham reached more than 210 million people (face to face and by satellite feeds) in over 185 countries and territories on six continents. The longest Graham’s evangelistic crusade took place in New York City in Madison Square Garden in 1957, which lasted 16 weeks. The largest audience in the history of Graham’s ministry assembled at Yoido Plaza in Seoul in South Korea in 1973 (ca. 1,1 million peoples).

Graham’s revival meetings were most commonly called “crusades,” and were billed as such for decades, but Graham himself began calling them “missions” after the September 11 attacks due to a potentially offensive connotation of the word “crusade” among Muslims. “Following September 11th, there was increased consciousness of other faiths in the U.S. that would find the term ‘crusade’ offensive,” Graham spokeswoman Melany Ethridge told The Associated Pressin 2002.

Evangelistic association

In 1950, Graham founded the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) with its headquarters in Minneapolis. The association relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1999. BGEA ministries have included:

  • Hour of Decision, a weekly radio program broadcast around the world for more than 50 years
  • Mission television specials broadcast in almost every market in the US and Canada
  • A syndicated newspaper column, My Answer, carried by newspapers across the United States and distributed byTribune Media Services
  • Decision magazine, the official publication of the association
  • Christianity Today was started in 1956 with Carl F. H. Henry as its first editor
  • Passageway.org, the website for a youth discipleship program created by BGEA
  • World Wide Pictures, which has produced and distributed more than 130 films

In April 2013, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association started “My Hope With Billy Graham”, the largest outreach in its history, encouraging church members to spread the gospel in small group meetings after showing a video message by Graham. “The idea is for Christians to follow the example of the disciple Matthew in the New Testament and spread the gospel in their own homes.” The video, called “The Cross”, is the main program in the My Hope America series and was also broadcast the week of Graham’s 95th birthday. In an email interview with WND, Graham wrote that “we are close to the end of the age”.
