Constance Caraway P.I. ~ Episode 220

…Ace Bannion and Agent Daniels leave Midway Airport with expectations that a climax is near…

“We have the unenviable task of guessing how (or if) Penty is going to attack. I know we are hoping that he shows his fangs, but what if he doesn’t?” Agent Daniels/Jesse James is feeling the stress of having to predict the unpredictable, expected to possess an intuitional advantage over his cohorts. “It seems I am slated to go along for the ride, Eddie’s carriages I hear.” There is a hint of trepidation in his voice. “But while we are circling the warning-track or up on stage telling our stories, we will be losing control of the venue.”

“I’m with you JJ, but the girls tell us that all we have to do is trust, especially Sister Mary Joseph. I think she would walk off a cliff and believe she would be O.K.” In between checking hydraulics and testing circuits on the repaired/restored Blue Ridge Angel, Ace equates the Tolentine nun’s faith to flying. “When we took off from KC, I had confidence that we would land safely in Chicago. I was sort a wrong this time. I saw my life flash before my eyes, and it may sound corny, but I relived every landing I have ever made in those final minutes.”

“Well I am trained to trust my instincts and I am positive that Penty will show himself, he cannot possibly pass this up.”

That’s where that weird paper we brought back from Wisconsin comes in.” Ace has seen things that defy logic.

“Yes, it is an instructional document, the very methods that Jesus’ disciples used to rid possessed folks of their demons. Jesus didn’t need a manual to do His thing, but we sure do!”

“It sounds like Billy or the good sister is rubbing off on you, Daniels?”

“Hey, if I have a choice, I’m riding in her wagon. I saw lightning take out a bad guy, with a finger on the trigger, twenty feet from her… and twenty-two feet from me. Am I a believer? You betcha!” Will he get his wish?

Bannion and Daniels both leave Midway Airport with expectations. They represent an overall sentiment that a climax is near.

As it was in the decades after the crucifixion of Jesus, so believe the most fervent presenters of the Good News; the return to Earth of the Messiah is around the corner… albeit God’s corner and that’s one big corner, h-u-g-e – big.

the Illinois speed traps were sneakily placed, while the unlucky deer was spending his evening hours chasing after a doe.

Speed Trap

“We will race back to see how things are shaking in Chi Town,” Race rhymes with Ace.

Constance rhymes with constant, “Let’s get back in one piece.”Deer Crossing

This time Highway 20 will see them back to home base, but not before acquiring two unwanted speeding tickets and colliding with an amorous White Tail buck; the Illinois speed traps were sneakily placed, while the deer was spending his evening hours chasing after a doe. The Buick Roadmaster is a 4415 pound vehicle so the deer barely leaves a mark, but the traffic violations mean that Ace will be making June trips, back to Jo Daviess and Boone counties.

When they do gain the expansive Cook County, a new morning has dawned. The roads and streets leading to the U of C are welcoming and more familiar than those of the past two weeks.Libby Dead or Alive-001

Homecomings, even to temporary homes, give the sojourners great comfort. 6137 Kimbark is just as they had left it, with the noticeable remixing of Willard Libby, who is hidden no more and basking in the positive reviews from Graham crusaders, longtime colleagues and educated citizenry. He has rekindled the national debate surrounding the divergent issues of creation and evolution.

Libbyites-001The man, who spawned the people known as the Libbyites, admits to being a changed man, like a new incarnation of his former self. From inside the Graham Crusades, this scientist has bridged the intellectual gap that has always existed between science and religion, a not small task in the face of prejudicial professional bias.

Without intentionally searching for it, Willard knows what it’s like to be a part of revival.

…Constance interrupts the frisky librarian’s fantasy before it can get out from behind the research desk…

Interrupted

Ace’s hitherto humble homebody aficionada takes a closer look at Constance’s intensity, conveniently ignoring exactly what she means.

Man ‘O Meter Art by Bill Frymire

“They are leaving Cedar Rapids and are headed to the Mississippi River. Then, they are to catch a paddle wheeler to the Twin Cities.” He sees the two women in a private discussion, accidentally stepping all over his own territorial rights. “Do you have any suggestions about how to intercept them on the way to Minnesota? Can we get there from here?”

“My family is from Mankato (MN),” Sarah’s man-o-meter is spiking into the red. “I could show you the way Mr. Bannion. I have some time off scheduled for next week. The crocuses should be blooming right now and I need to help plan a family reunion… let me get a road atlas, the new 1951 Edition…”

Constance interrupts that fantasy before it can get out from behind the research desk.

We have our reliable State Farm road map and we really must be going! We need to pick up our things in Eagle and check out of our motel and bid Polly Pabst farewell…”

Can’t a librarian dream a little?

Leaving Cooney is exactly what they (Ace & Constance) do, by heading due west to Prairie du Chien, with intent to deliver a radical religious recipe for demonic demotion, in the form of a lambskin scroll, to Billy Graham. Just how far the preacher will go to put the ancient script into action remains to be seen, but for the two temporary Wisconsin citizens, the end justifies the means, even if it meant braving a lusting librarian.

—United States interregional highways are improving, albeit slowly, but the need for a nationwide roadway plan is recognized and in the works. The issue of national defense is the driving force behind these logistical studies—

They could use a superhighway about now.

US Highway 18 will take away from Oconomowoc and provide them a concrete pathway, through the rolling hills, past the Wisconsin state capitol of Madison and out to the mouth of the Wisconsin River, where it empties into the Mighty Mississippi.

Out on the floor of the Chicago Stadium:

“That will be a wrap, boys,” Samuel Goldwyn Jr. is speaking with the control booth of the Chicago Stadium. It took some technical magic, but he was able to use his family reputation to convince NBC to carry the Billy Graham Crusade Day Three “live”, opposite the popular Arthur Godfrey and His Friends on CBS. That is a broadcasting coup, considering that there was no prearranged contract and that Graham had turned down million$$ from the network months ago, in order to continue his revival commitments.

Godfrey

“How did it look Samuel?” Preacher Billy is speaking through a microphone to Samuel’s headphones, hoping for the best. In a leap of faith, instead of just reaching the thousands in attendance, he was stepping through television tubes into tens of thousand households around the world.

“To be frank, this television thing will not lure me away from the big screen,” Goldwyn is true to his Hollywood roots, “but I must say, from this side of the camera, you knocked it out of the stadium, Mr. Graham!”

“Praise the Lord!” he assigns the proper attribute. “I think that Mr. Libby is honing his presentation with every passing night, though I cannot imagine that he will be makingMath-001 the barnstorming bus tour with us.”

“That is why we got everything on film, right? You can plug him in whenever you want to, just show the videotape. That’s why I hired a second cameraman to record his entire segment, from intro to ovation.” Foresight is 90% skill and 20% luck, which adds up to 110, but the extra 10% is God’s behind-the-scenes dynamic.

Billy would put it this way, “Do you want 110% assurance that you will go to Heaven? Just like Willard Libby’s creation-proving science, ask God to be your mathematician.”

And now for a commercial break.

Now here’s our friend Arthur Godfrey with a song:

Chapter Sixteen

PRECIPITOUS

Libby thoughts-001

…Random ramblings from the principles of Libby Affair…

“Are you saying the landing gear locks were disabled or was there a mechanical failure?” Ace Bannion asks the Civil Aeronautics Board inspector the same question for the second time. They are standing next to the fallen Angel of Blue Ridge.

You were mugged? You have to be crapping me!” Constance has just found out that Worth Moore was beaten on afternoon of the plane crash. She is getting tired of F M’s assault on all things Libby.

“I’m so sorry Worth! I cannot believe that you are a target. That means none of us are safe.” The CCPI 2nd female is genuinely worried about a man for… maybe the first time. She tends to him like a Florence, not a Fanny.

Did you hear about that crash out at Midway Airport? It was Rev Graham’s plane and Ace Bannion was the pilot.” Eddie Dombroski speaks to wife Edie from a place of sympathy. Even as he is on the mend, he still feels like a member of the team.

“I am 90 percent sure that Forever Mastadon is fronted by the Department of Justice. The FBI is up to their neck at 5046 and way in over their heads when it comes to knowing what this whole battle is about.” Agent Daniels is up front with his assessment of the Libby Affair.

“Half of my staff are either bandaged or in splints. Do you want me to carry on with the Chicago Stadium alter call?” Reverend Billy Graham is speaking to his Lord, a habit that he will never lose and an example of living his faith.

“What do I have to do to put an end to these people? The Divine One is set against the Great Deception.” Pentateuch would be talking to L. Dick Cannon directly, had he been up front with the man and told him who he really was. Instead Cannon slithers away to his true delusional followers.

“Maybe we should abandon Project Forever Mastadon. Would it be the end of the world if “they” find out that humankind has only been around for 20 thousand years?” Gilbert Conroy, the science dork, asks the Deputy Attorney General Ross.

“My fellow Americans, I speak to you as a believer, a believer in the grace of Jesus Christ, not as your President,” President Harry Truman is making good on his promise that he would use his weekly radio address to urge his fellow Americans to affirm their faith in God.

”Is a scientific breakthrough worth all the trouble it has caused?” Willard Libby wonders.

Not-so-random orders from the top…

“Gabriel.”

“I am here Lord.”

“It is time.”

“I understand.”

…My dad was told that he couldn’t make a movie about lesbians, so he said, ‘That’s alright, we’ll call them Hungarians’…

… Oops. Young Samuel Goldwyn has accidentally stepped into tabooed doo doo.Image result for misquoted

Connie’s face turns robust shade of crimson.

“Hey, I misquote the Bible all the time,” Billy fortuitously rushes past those misplaced sexual references. “Say, if you are looking for outside work, I have been thinking about recording my Chicago Crusade, in case you would be interested.”

“I could hang around town for a while, if it is worth my while,” Goldwyn the younger speculates about his near future. “I could edit my footage for the air travel documentary here in Chicago instead of going back to California.”

“May I suggest that I relinquish my rights for anything you film at our meetings, you know, all those intensely personal stories about folks from all walks of life getting saved? It is some powerful theater.”

“My father has a screenplay about a traveling tent preacher, Elmer Gantry I believe; maybe we can take something away from it, work together on a picture down the road.”

“Sounds great, but I’ve got to get back to my people, Samuel. Samuel — that is a great name, 1st & 2nd in the Old Testament.” Pastors cannot help but tie everyday things into the Bible. Graham hands the conversation back, “You can reach me through Miss Caraway.”

“The way things come together these days is the cat’s meow… we travel by air and talk over the telephone, just like that,” like the snap of her fingers, Constance comments on how things can form a network so quickly these days.

“The cat’s meow, the cat’s pajamas whatever, this cat is making Chicago home for a month.”

“You better bring your new wife out or you won’t be married for long.”Get It Right

“Good point, Cassie, I will ring up Jennifer from the terminal.”

“It’s Connie and if you don’t start getting my name right, you won’t live to see tomorrow!”

Libbyites-001“Look, I’m taking notes,” he scribbles away quickly. “We have Constance Caraway and Ace Bannion, Rev. Billy and who…?”

“… and Fanny Renwick, Worth Moore, Martin Kamen, Eddie & Edie Dombroski, Jesse James and the star of the show, Willard Libby, over there with blood running down his temple. Got it Goldwyn?”

“I have a feeling that I will be meeting the rest of these folks soon,” Samuel’s mother had little to do with his rearing, so there is an adjustment period with a dominant female like Constance, “and remind me not to ruffle your feathers.”

There is a preponderance of high achievers gathering in Chicago.  You could call it just a coincidental confluence of concerned citizens, but you would be wrong.

There are no coincidences under the loving umbrella of God and there exists but one rainmaker capable of arranging for these dramatis personae, in this place, at this time.

Constance Caraway P.I. ~ Episode 180

… P.I. Caraway and Hollywood Goldwyn have hijacked a baggage tow and sprinted through the muddy grass to the crippled plane…

After the smoke clears from around the 27,393 pounds of steel and aluminum, loaded with Crusade props and Jesus freaks, pilot Ace and the other everything are still in one piece. His copilot is passed out and the navigator is face down on the cockpit deck, so he climbs over debris to check on his human cargo.  He finds the good Reverend is already checking on everyone, as is the registered nurse who is in the crusades’ employ.

Happy

The newest member of the revival staff, Willard Libby gives Billy a wave, unable to shake the thought that he brought the trouble with him, like the other improbable events over the past 4 months.

And other than a few loose wits and several severed nerves, the truly injured have but minor issues, none life-threatening.

“Normally I consider applause as inappropriate, but this ain’t Sunday and we ain’t in church!” He raises his hands to God in praise and directs the passengers in very appropriate hand-to-hand (raucous) appreciation.

The ever modest Ace takes a bow while opening the boarding door. There are airport bowpersonnel down on the ground, but they have no way of off-loading the people, seeing they are nosed out into a city street. They need to wait for the ambulances and shuttle buses to make their way, down 63rd Street, then up Central to nearly 55th.

One face, in the concerned throng below, is a familiar one; Constance Caraway is there with arms weighed down by blankets for those in need, but her spirits lifted high by answered prayer. She and Samuel Goldwyn the junior have hijacked a baggage tow and sprinted through the muddy grass to the crippled plane. The neophyte film producer has captured the entire calamity on film and now sets up his equipment for the aftermath.

She is among the first up the stair/ramp when it is placed roughly against the tilted fuselage, protocol be damned, “Excuse me, can I get through with these blankets?”

“You heard the lady,” Captain Bannion is coordinating the unloading of Crusade people, each according to their ambulatory status. At second blush, there are more serious injuries than previously reported, most likely because, to a man and woman, were plain grateful to have survived at all; never mind that sore shoulder or stiff leg.
