APPENDIX A

..A loving summary of the book you’ve just read…

…from the author’s perspective…

WARNING!!!  Do not read this before you have read the body of Constance Caraway ~Forever Mastadon~. If you continue to read this “spoiler section”, you will have a greater insight into the aftermath….

As an author, specializing in my own brand of Historical Fiction, I would be the first to admit that I deal heavily in fiction. The  characters (most, you guess which) are figments of my imagination. The ones that are not, i.e. Billy Graham, Samuel Goldwyn Jr. are doing my bidding., Martin Kamen and of course Willard Libby are carrying out my version of what happened in 1951 Chicago.

I believe that when I say, “My method of using history as a backdrop is an incredibly accurate depiction of what is going on, in any year that I write about”, that it is not an immodest statement. Here in Forever Mastadon, as in THE LIFE AND TIMES OF A BLACK SOUTHERN DOCTOR (Alpha Omega M.D.), I encourage you to dig deeper and test what I put to page; call me out on anything questionable.

Here is an example: When I have the Chicago Police frequenting a donut shop (a blatant generalization), I refer to Dunkin’ Donuts as the name of their hangout. They are tending to Worth Moore after he was mugged in the Bronzeville. To make sure of the veracity of that reference, I use one of my greatest assets, WIKPEDIA to find out that Dunkin’ Donuts was incorporated in 1950. SO, I trust that I am correct on the ‘Windy City’ connection, though there may not have been one in that particular neighborhood.

The type of airplane Ace Bannion flies, the taxi that Eddie Dombroski uses or the streets of the day that he drives or the authenticity of the Danforth Lodge in the 1951 version of my hometown, Oconomowoc Wisconsin; other instances where my research methodology is tested. If that twin-engine Beechcraft Twin Bonanza that Constance Caraway & Associates (Ace) buys, near the end of the book, does not exist in real time, I would not have mentioned it, some other airplane model would have been used.

The bottom line: you can trust that this author takes care of the past, while praying for the future, loving both for their place in time.

Using different text colors for different characters is meant to make it easier to keep track of “conversation” in any given episode.

My use of “homemade” graphic art, real art, photographs and Youtube.com for music is meant to augment my daily episodes; a sort of picture book style… 400 words and a song…

I must admit to a personal bias, one that has taken hold of my text, not knowing with what magnitude it would hijack it. I am a committed Christian who, when confronted with the issue of radiocarbon dating and its relevance to the issue of Creation versus Evolution, I decided to not only side with Creation, but tie it into the distinct possibility that “6 days and a rest” is closer to the truth.

If you happen to disagree, so be it. I have endeavored to make Forever Mastadon an interesting story none-the-less.

Constance Caraway is not finished solving cases, and as her author I have everything to say about that. Chances are good that future books will not turn into a religious laden, good and evil diatribe.

Thank you for reading Forever Mastadon and stay tuned for Alpha Omega M.D.

DOWN THE ROAD

…So what is in store for the Libbyite nation?…

Eddie Dombroski and his Cousin Rex forge a solid business model with their carriage cartage. Though others will imitate, none can duplicate that Southside family legacy.

Edie D. will continue to support the husband that she came oh so close to losing; two bullets short – a hundred stories yet to endure. You can read from the archival links

Jesse James will always have a connection to Caraway & Associates, but will hang on to his Agent Daniels personae. Or is it that he is terminally tied to government service?

Sister Mary Joseph will continue to serve the Lord at the Tolentine Monastery, fifty yards or so from where a rare, stray lightning bolt struck on a fortuitous January day in 1951.

Doctor Louis Steinberg, formerly of Elgin State Mental Hospital, takes his experience with Willard Libby (John Doe) and makes catatonia his life’s study, writing many go-to books on the condition.

Martin Kamen will go on to extol the virtues of his radioisotope carbon-14, while searching other chemical corners of Creation for undiscovered gems.

Willard Libby wins the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery of carbon-14 half-life, as it relates to dating organic elements. He ends his tenure at the University of Chicago, takes an emeritus position there and he tours the world, lecturing open, eager ears about the probable age of the Universe.

William Franklin “Billy” Graham Jr. spreads God’s Word through his Crusades, counsels US Presidents (for their own good) and begins to champion the civil rights movement by his association with Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Thanks to his crusades and television broadcasts, millions across the globe accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. No better man of God has there ever been made.

The members of Constance Caraway & Associates, Constance, Fanny Renwick, Ace Bannion and R. Worth Moore are united in their continuing mission: No Stone Unturned and No Place To Hide; one for all, each with a particular skill-set to contribute to the cause.

Please stay tuned. Though this is THE END to the story of Forever Mastadon, it is not an end to further adventures; forward or backward in time, Tallahassee/Chicago or the world and beyond, the fictional tales of Constance Caraway will live on, somewhere down the road.

…The P.I. talks to her people before the Comiskey Park Greater Chicago Crusade Revival Grand Finale…

Reflection CC-fm-001

She saunters over to the shorter Martin Kamen to plant a kiss on top of his head. Of all the people and situations that Fanny and she have encountered, it is Willard Libby’s closest colleague who has been there every step of the way. Whatever it took, whenever it was needed, Martin stepped out of his comfort zone to make things happen. He opened his home to two strange ladies and allowed them to take the lead.

“Without Martin, I am afraid we are not standing here ready to ride around a baseball field filled with people, in C-14 Coaches. He discovered carbon-14, which prior to very recently, we thought were 14 pieces of burnt toast. If he doesn’t get someone else involved, Willard may still be squirreled away in a mental hospital, right Dr. Steinberg?”

Looking at Willard’s Aunt, she comments, “I understand that you and our man of many names, let’s see: Jesse James/Agent Daniels/Bernard Spencer/The Rogue and whatever else Penty and Forever Mastadon calls him, have bonded over that lightning strike; Mother Teresa meets Elliot Ness meets Mother Nature…

“You’re a man who travels in more circles than a carnival pony, Jesse. If you ever want to write a book, I have a friend named Gwenny who can help you with that; such are the quality stories you can tell. But even if you keep your secrets close to your vest, you have renewed my faith in government employee and again, without your dances with the devil, we’re not successful.”

Constance Caraway P.I. ~ Episode 185

…Pentateuch has been crossed and triple-crossed, with a double cherry on top…

There can be heard a mighty roar from out the Lake of Fire, the whole Earth growlsRed from within.

What could trigger such a geophysical belch? “WILLARD LIBBY IS ALIVE!” not a rejoicing regurgitation from Pentateuch.

Since, from the earliest reports at Elgin State Hospital, when he learned of Willard Libby’s unintended, but accepted death, the Dark One has been kept in the dark. There is not a sorer loser, on Earth or below, that exists. It may be, that the short phrase ‘seeing red’, was coined in 1951.

Suddenly Forever Mastadon and World Agnostica Unlimited are rendered meaningless. All the earthly co conspirators, like the Justice Department a.k.a. the FBI, Canisso and his thugs, McGraw-Hill Publishing, L. Dick Cannon or the newest saboteurs from the CAA, they all can go their merry way, quite possibly reuniting in hell.

“Losers be damned every one of them! I’ve been duped by Cephus, whom I trusted, and a female weakling with her ragamuffin mercenaries. I knew there had to be a reason she was putting her friends in front of me, ripe for peril. WILLARD LIBBY IS ALIVE & SO IS THAT MISERABLE MARTIN KAMEN!”

And though he never truly thought that Cephus(Daniels) had perished in the Argonne fire, he could never focus on the man’s countenance enough to be sure. Even the chief demon has a fatal flaw.

The fact is: He has been crossed and triple-crossed, with a cherry on top.

betrayed

With hands lifted out, gyrating with his greatest urgency, the Dark Deceiver summons the worst of his fallen angels to come to battle. No more mister nice guy or withholding his ire about a situation from which he has lost a grip.

A war is erupting, with The Chicago Stadium as the Holy Battlefield.

Chapter Sixteen

PRECIPITOUS

Libby thoughts-001

…Random ramblings from the principles of Libby Affair…

“Are you saying the landing gear locks were disabled or was there a mechanical failure?” Ace Bannion asks the Civil Aeronautics Board inspector the same question for the second time. They are standing next to the fallen Angel of Blue Ridge.

You were mugged? You have to be crapping me!” Constance has just found out that Worth Moore was beaten on afternoon of the plane crash. She is getting tired of F M’s assault on all things Libby.

“I’m so sorry Worth! I cannot believe that you are a target. That means none of us are safe.” The CCPI 2nd female is genuinely worried about a man for… maybe the first time. She tends to him like a Florence, not a Fanny.

Did you hear about that crash out at Midway Airport? It was Rev Graham’s plane and Ace Bannion was the pilot.” Eddie Dombroski speaks to wife Edie from a place of sympathy. Even as he is on the mend, he still feels like a member of the team.

“I am 90 percent sure that Forever Mastadon is fronted by the Department of Justice. The FBI is up to their neck at 5046 and way in over their heads when it comes to knowing what this whole battle is about.” Agent Daniels is up front with his assessment of the Libby Affair.

“Half of my staff are either bandaged or in splints. Do you want me to carry on with the Chicago Stadium alter call?” Reverend Billy Graham is speaking to his Lord, a habit that he will never lose and an example of living his faith.

“What do I have to do to put an end to these people? The Divine One is set against the Great Deception.” Pentateuch would be talking to L. Dick Cannon directly, had he been up front with the man and told him who he really was. Instead Cannon slithers away to his true delusional followers.

“Maybe we should abandon Project Forever Mastadon. Would it be the end of the world if “they” find out that humankind has only been around for 20 thousand years?” Gilbert Conroy, the science dork, asks the Deputy Attorney General Ross.

“My fellow Americans, I speak to you as a believer, a believer in the grace of Jesus Christ, not as your President,” President Harry Truman is making good on his promise that he would use his weekly radio address to urge his fellow Americans to affirm their faith in God.

”Is a scientific breakthrough worth all the trouble it has caused?” Willard Libby wonders.

Not-so-random orders from the top…

“Gabriel.”

“I am here Lord.”

“It is time.”

“I understand.”

Constance Caraway P.I. ~ Episode 175

…After a stop at THE newest cop-spot in town, hands their partially pulverized passenger his wallet, with most of his money in it…

“We was only susposed to rough him up good, Neal,” is the fleeing mugger’s lament.

The other cop in pursuit, who looks like he spends half of his shift at the donut shop, gives up the chase, in order to catch his breath and pick up the loose items. Some of the money magically disappears into his pocket.

He walks unsteadily back to his partner, who has summoned a paddy wagon for the offender in hand and an ambulance for hospital transport; but the medics merely serve as a mobile emergency room, attending to a few scratches and a bruised ego. “Can you guys give me a lift to 6137 Kimbark,” is all Worth Moore asks of the police.

After a stop at THE newest cop-spot in town, Dunkin’ Donuts, the officer with the bigger sack of baked confection, hands their partially pulverized passenger his wallet, with most of his money in it, plus, “I don’t know if this means anything toFM Biz-001 you.”

“Forever Mastadon, 5046 South Greenwood… so much for a random attack,” Worth realizes that because of his association with CCPI, he is now a prime target for revenge action. He hands the card back, “This was no accident. When you question the thug you did catch, try to get to the bottom of this so-called business.”

“5046 is off limits to us… now,” stated like a good soldier.Greenwood-001

“What do you mean off limits? There is awfully suspicious activity coming from that house and you are telling me that you cannot complete an investigation?”

“After an incident a week or so back, we must have pissed someone off, because all of a sudden it is on our blacklist and that comes right from the top. Hey I was there and it was plain freaky.”Libby Affair-001

Moore has first hand information of what went down that day, so traveling further down that road is unnecessary, but a top-down directive usually means some sort of cover up. Suffice it to be said, that the scope of this Libby Affair is without definable limits.
