Constance Caraway P.I. ~ Episode 93

…First comes the bright flash – then a loud crack and explosive boom…

Off in the distance he can hear and feel a low rumbling, like a passing locomotive or … thunder… in winter, can it be?

He knows that he is supposed to lure Sister Mary from the Holy shield of the Tolentine multi-level interconnected roofs, so he suggests, “It’s such a pleasant day, can we catch a bit of fresh air?”

“Why certainly, Mr. Spencer, you lead the way.”

He strolls out from under the entrance overhang and close to a courtyard filled with statues, crosses and stone tablets. “Let’s go down the drive and back,” he passes the car that brought him here. It is empty. He keeps an eye out for any excuse to make the planned nun-elimination go away.

Dark clouds have been forming on the quarter mile walk down to the street, they are ominous and rolling. The warmish winds are freshening to a formidable gale, blowing Daniel’s fedora out into a nearby open slushy snow-laden field. Running out to fetch it, he catches a glimpse of a figure poised behind an arching arborvitae.

They pass by the shrubbery without incident, but Daniels still weaves forth and back, like a drunken pedestrian, to make a clear sightline difficult in expectation of a coming gunshot.

lightning“Are you all right Mr. Spencer?” if she only knew.

Instead of the bang of a gun, the blackened sky opens up to expose a white gaping hole, with a bolt of lightning streaking down from it. First comes the bright flash, and then because of the close proximity, a simultaneously loud crack and explosive boom follows, chards of soil falling back to the ground.

Both the nun and the spy cower in reaction to it. The entire event is over just as quickly and as they look up in the sky, the visage of an angel ascends through the white hole into the heavens, taking the storminess with.

Every hair on their bodies is electrified, standing straight out. Sister Mary is kneeling with arms wide open in praise, Daniels is trying to digest what he just saw. There is a smoking crater where Canisso was lurking and the smell of charred flesh.

“Let’s get back inside, quick,” he urges, not wanting a repeat of what had just happened. Mary Joseph rises from her knees hardly believing that she had seen an Angel from Heaven.

“It is done Lord,” Gabriel reports.

“I am pleased Gabriel.”

Constance Caraway P.I. ~ Episode 14

…“You have to understand what the man’s life was like; he did not have one…

Fanny’s simple solution of interviewing everyone at Argonne may have some holes.

“That would seem logical, Miss Renwick, but we have a new, state-of the-art, and panoramic film camera system that records everything… and I mean everything that goes on here.

“I went over the pictures with Security two days before the Carbon-14 Summit was to start and then three days after we suspected that he had gone missing.” People at a Top Secret government facility just don’t walk away unnoticed.

You have to understand what the man’s life was like; he did not have one. He’s been like a bloodhound on the trail of raccoon, obsessed by radiocarbon dating. With little family, no wives or children and a general distaste for conventional forms of entertainment, all he has was his work and the respect that it provides.”

“Too bad security wasn’t this tight back in ’42,” Constance refers to the double-agent case they worked and chronicled in CONSTANCE CARAWAY: SPIES AT WAR. “The Feds were all over Los Alamos, so we mopped up here at Argonne.”

“Wow, I was working on my Masters way back then,” young Martin spouts inoffensively.

“Ouch, thank you for reminding me of my age—-I mean years of experience,” some offense taken.

“That is how I learned about your investigative prowess.” He respects his elders. “I do my homework and you were the one who exposed James East as Victor VonOeste.”

“We got lucky there. Most of the secret selling came from within the nuke program. VonOeste had only acted as if he was double-crossing the Germans, when in fact they were as thick as thieves.” In perhaps her best-ever masquerade, Constance had been inserted into the program as a micro-technician (Fanny was a cleaning woman and not happy about it). That was only thing small about her investigation. “But enough about the past; we are looking for your friend and colleague who left the grounds undetected.”

THE RETURN TRIP – Episode 32

…Four armed guards charge out of the left-hinged gate, the one in the lead asking, “Are you Aldona Afridi?”…

All in all, Afridi has time to loosen the noose around his neck, having left the hardest roads behind. That he lives to tell the tale is testimony to his firm resolve and evidence of his good fortune.

The homemade taxi pulls up to the gates of the Ahmet Mosque, tall and unwelcoming. Four armed guards are-you-001charge out of the left-hinged gate, the one in the lead asking, “Are you Aldona Afridi?”

“I didn’t know what he was up to, I swear,” pleads the spineless driver, once an ally.

“Not you Cabbie! We are from the American Consulate, called here by your wife, she told us you would be coming.” Those are Marine uniformed men. “Pulls that hunk of junk into that garage and leave the keys with the Sergeant.”

Naturally they comply, while being led inside, then left alone. The young Turk comments, “Whoever you are or whatever you know, I am impressed Saied.”

“Fatima, my dear Fatima,” Afridi prays aloud.

“Your fat mother?”

He needs to fill in the gaping blanks, “My name is Aldona Afridi and my wife Fatima and my two daughters are probably inside somewhere.”

“And mine is Mehmet Ali Erim,” they embrace like old friends. “I own a taxi, what do you do?”

“I am a scientist not a criminal, and there evil men chasing me!”

“I am intrigued, but not surprised Saied Al. You act like a man with a scorpion in your pants.”

“Do not tell Mr. Erim anything else,” the embassy guards warn.

“They know my name!”Image result for spy

“They may have been listening when you introduced yourself,” Afridi remarks, being the “seasoned spy” that he has become.

They are escorted into the catacombs of the 3rd Century structure and shown separate rooms. The two shake hands, not knowing what the future holds.

Mehmet Ali Erim is briefly debriefed as a precaution and released to the streets and his next fare.

Aldona Afridi is grilled on a number of subjects, none of which mention his defection, so it is he who asks, “May I see my family and when can I speak to someone about the Space Colony?”space-colony-banner-001

The team of inquisitors is headed by Elliot Deming, Consulate General of the Turkish delegation based in Ankara. The very tall middle-aged American political appointee paces in front of Aldona, knowing that he has not heard the whole story. “The Ambassador to Turkey is scheduled to arrive in another hour. We cannot move on your wife’s suspicious information until the Ambassador personally speaks with the Secretary of State.”

“What I have to say cannot wait…I would not have risked my family’s lives for anything less!”

“We have to fully vet your story, I hope you understand?”

“No.” This is no time for governmental red tape. He hangs his weary and exasperated head.
